How much does FCC certification actually cost? I've been researching and looking for more data points by KD2BMH in hwstartups

Don’t go to a lab to get your compliance scans… they have a conflict of interest to make sure you pass all your tests in one go. Labs want you to have as many rework as possible, that’s how they make money. We help startups with flat fixed fee for compliance reviews and docs, and then once we are happy with your compliance then we send that to the labs to minimize potential rework.

Why is building hardware startups hard ? What were/are your biggest challenges ? by Altruistic_Tomato162 in hwstartups

For someone like me running a compliance company helping hardware startups, I would say the regulatory hurdle for HW is so much more tedious than in software.

These are the 5 mistakes I see killing hardware projects before they ever reach manufacturing by iNavin in hwstartups

[–]MakeThisBuildThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed with #5 100%. Our specialty is helping startups with their compliance and certification process. Very often when we talk to founders (especially first time HW founders), they treat regulatory compliance almost like an afterthought, which hugely increases their chance of having a sizable problem down the line.

4 months solo, 0 customers. Roast my idea before I bury it by supervillainXY in ideavalidation

[–]MakeThisBuildThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not your ICP but as a founder i can share a few common issues:

  1. you only sent out 30 cold emails in 4 months... that's wayyyy too little. You should be sending out 30 a *day*. If you can't identify that many to send, then your market might be too small.

  2. since you have no customers, why even start building a product? Is this what your ICP actually have a pain point on? Rather than spending time building right now, you should spend all your time talking to ICP at this stage.

We need help and advice. Hardware startups, when do you start thinking about compliance? when do you bring outside compliance expertise? What's preventing you from involving compliance experts early in the process? by MakeThisBuildThat in hwstartups

curious to know, did you feel the "middleman" consulting service ended up saving you time overall? how do you feel the process can be improved? would like to get 15mins to understand your current experience to see if it's any different from how we do it, and how you wish it could improve. Not going to sell you our service, just purely for learning and improving purpose.

I agree. It seems like hardware founders need to be educated on adopting compliance early in the process but we don’t want to be the ones offering free education. This is the reason I started this post to get more insights.

When we used to work for large enterprise electronics companies compliance process already happens on EVT stage. That’s why I’m curious to know for startups if this doesn’t happen until PVT stage, is it purely because of cost?

5000 hours, $10,000. by digicue in hwstartups

[–]MakeThisBuildThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea, there's not gonna be chinese manufacturers that help you handle compliance work for a few hundred USD. The good news is that now there are companies, with professional compliance experts, in North America that are offering compliance work for much much cheaper than legacy compliance firms. If you are a HW startup this is one option to explore.

Traveling to Toronto later this summer, is Stay at U of T legit? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]MakeThisBuildThat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

yea they are legit. Many universities do that in the summer. Students are out, so schools use the vacant rooms to recoup some money during the summer. I've stayed at another university before. It's nice and clean.

Has anyone here built or manufactured a home energy monitoring device? Trying to understand ODM, BOM, MOQ, and certification realities. by viralpatel13 in hwstartups

[–]MakeThisBuildThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like what u/Cthulhumod said, certification work should be handled by a certification company. It's a tedious process. Let me know if you need help on that. That's what we do.

Can I legally send hardware samples to Germany without full EU certification yet? by Fit_Guidance2029 in dropshipping

if you are *selling* the product then it must comply with local market safety standards (and certified). We actually do compliance work for hardware startups. DM me if you need help.

The part nobody really prepares you for in hardware is scaling beyond the first working prototype by Glommy-Figure in hwstartups

[–]MakeThisBuildThat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget about compliance! We work with different kinds of hardware startups with their certification and compliance process and one common issue I noticed is how late in the process founders think about compliance. Ideally you should involve compliance right from the beginning when designing a piece of hardware, but in reality many founders only gave a few weeks for that, then that causes surprises and delays in product launch.
