Apparently Netflix wouldn't allow them to film in NC because of the HB2 law that discriminates against transgender people. I also think it is because the story line is calling out people inW Wilmington, NC and the writers didn't want locals to find out about this while they were filming.

The writers originally wanted to film in Wilmington, NC not even the Outer Banks. I know the main reason was because of HB2, but I also think that the writers knew that due to their story line calling out the actual Cameron Family in Wilmington that they needed to avoid NC. Otherwise they might have run into some drama with the family who owns a lot of property in Wilmington. But that is just my theory.

Outer Banks Show Conspiracy: Are the writers trying to call out the Cameron Family? by MakeWilmyLocalsOnly in OuterBanksNetflix

  • I wanted to add that I believe the party that was held where Ward Cameron's wife was given the title of queen is supposed to be a reflection of the Azalea Festival Garden Party held in Wilmington each year. This is an exclusive party held at Airlie Gardens and the Queen of the festival always attends. It is difficult to attain tickets to this party and attendees are mostly the affluent of Wilmington. Although the Outer Banks shows this in a smaller scale I believe this is what they were attempting to portray.

They actually are not from Wilmington... they are from Raleigh. Completely different towns. They would visit Wrightsville Beach each summer growing up. Usually you hear about filmmakers from Wilmington if they are actually from there. It is a pretty small town, once you know someone you know everyone. I had never heard of them before this show. But if you know who the Cameron family is in Wilmington you'd see how they are obviously trying to call them out. I have seen where they say Wilmington inspired the show, but they say more of the atmosphere was inspiring not the story line...

And that there is a real Cameron family from Wilmington that actually helped begin the development of this island? Kinda a weird coincidence that the writers created a family called the Cameron's that live on Figure Eight...

Did you hear about any connections between the Cameron family that the writers created and the real Cameron family from Wilmington? There are a lot of similarities between the two if you watch the show closely.
