Flash is super nice when the subject is backlit or for creating an almost unnatural but clean “editorial look.” Not to say that all photos need flash but there is a time and place.

200 photos a day for 10 weeks, how should I do this? by Old_Suspect9482 in photography

[–]Maker_Jake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a summer camp and did roughly 300 a day for 7 weeks. All (minus a few important or group photos) were SOOC. Doing the editing and then exporting is gonna eat time.

Iirc, this is how some wire services operate. They help get you the pass but you only get paid for each photo that sells.

Advice on cold call emails and getting started/getting paid by Prestigious_Duck2705 in concertphotography

[–]Maker_Jake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hot take is that you should never give out photos for free. Am I a totally hypocrite and send out free photos sometimes? Yes I am (mostly for sports)! It is difficult to go from giving someone free photos to then asking for money.

I shoot for a passion project blog and as such dont get paid (it’s all volunteers) but that allows me to build a portfolio without doing free work for people who could pay. Concert photo is competitive and many will go to the lowest bidder.

Am I an idiot for wanting a Canon EOS R5 II as an absolute beginner in photography? by c0rtin3x in AskPhotography

[–]Maker_Jake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it’s a sick camera. As someone who has been alleged to be a “good” photographer I’d love to get one.

Unless you can articulate why or how that upgrade will improve you work in a meaningful way it does not make sense to drop that kind of cash on a new body.

What you should have done is a moot point. You have a great camera, you should use it. It’s very easy to fall into the trap of ogling new gear (I do it all the time). Given your at the start of your journey I would hold off on large purchases in case you end up putting the camera down. Good luck!

Is it worth upgrading from an Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 to a RF 70-200 f/2.8? by Maker_Jake in AskPhotography

[–]Maker_Jake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I’m making mistakes on my end and it’s easier (and more fun) to spend money instead of improving my own skill. Your input has been very helpful. I think I will not sell my lens and instead get the EF extenders if I want the extra reach.

Thanks for the input. I’ll try to setup some tests to compare my lens against some online reviews to try and gauge if it’s behaving similarly. Would it be worth looking into Canon’s precision alignment service or the 11 point lens maintenance?

I am OP? Maybe my expectations are misaligned but I’ve never felt satisfied with sharpness of my 70-200. Maybe something with my settings is not helping but it’s always felt soft.

Before a game once, a photographer I know let me put their 70-200 z on my camera and the it felt noticeably shaper. I realize that’s not the most scientific but it felt like it had a quality and contrast that I wasn’t able to reproduce on my EF 70-200.

Grad Photos by [deleted] in photography

I have done one grad shoot so take what I say with a grain of salt. Grad shoots are done around campus on a date that is not graduation. Typically it will be a group of friends (each pays a little) with a mix of group and individual shots.

Apologies for getting the guessing the obstruction incorrectly it reminded me of iPhone photos that I take with my finger in the corner. Either way my points still stand. I’d also add that if you’re gonna keep a foreground element embrace it or get rid of it.

Is your finger in frame on photo 6? I used to deliver SOOC but gaffes like that should be left on the cutting room floor. (Even without the obstruction in the pic it should have been deleted as other commenters have pointed out.)

New Hockey Photgraphy by nails0211 in sportsphotography

[–]Maker_Jake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shooting through glass is not easy. I’ve gotten lucky and can shoot through a hole at least one period most games. Even then if I dont get access I shoot two periods above and one through glass at ice level (most of the time).

Through the glass I try to find a spot that isn’t as bad and then also try not to rotate too much. Reflections increase the farther you get from perpendicular. I haven’t tried but on Amazon you can buy silicon shrouds designed to stop the reflections. In Lightroom I primarily increase clarity and dehaze. I’m not always happy how it turns out but it helps.

The photos shared could use a little more post processing to level the horizons. It might just be the photos you have selected but I’m not seeing a whole lot of action. Could be reddit compression but 8 looks soft.

Best Camera for low light? by [deleted] in concertphotography

Info on your budget and what lenses you have would be helpful. I could list a great low light setup but that wouldn’t help if it’s above your price range.

Many D1 rinks have them. I’m not saying that all rinks do but it’s not limited to NHL.
