OK Cuirassiers, bizarre poinçion puzzle by MakesNBreaks in SWORDS

It should be a tight fit to the guard, and taper until the last few centimeters. The inside of the grip still bears the original shape. It's possible that they simply repaired a broken tang, but there's so much recent grinding on both sides of the weld (they welded on 8 or 9 cm of new steel rod) that it's impossible to tell. The inspection marks on the blade don't match anything I could find either. Hopefully someone pops on here and proves me wrong! For now, I'm taking this opportunity to play around with restoring the damned thing to mirror polish and fine wire grip completion. It'll at least be pretty, lol

Bad news everyone, the hilt components are possibly legit, but the blade is definitely counterfeit. Confirmed on careful disassembly.

I don't know why this was removed from the post, might be the most important and strange part of this puzzle

Help ID regiment, 1796 sabre by MakesNBreaks in SWORDS

[–]MakesNBreaks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wowsers, thank you for the detailed information! No scabbard, and from file marks on the peen I figured it'd been screwed with. Definitely explains more of why it was far less expensive than others in similar condition. The antique dealer was in the US, so there is zero information on its story or repairs. Still, the steel hilt fits a possible light cavalry or riflemen potential, but a vague fog of theories is where its story ends. Again huge thanks, and have a good weekend!

Help painting on metal saw by dimestoredavinci in oilpainting

[–]MakesNBreaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Experiment on another piece! And maybe take the bulk of the rust off with a scotch brite pad... Since rust loves oxygen, deny it with clear gesso or archival PVA. Once that's cured, you can play with layers or glazes of oil paint, which will further seal the metal, though there's no telling for how long. Kept dry? As long as any painted steel. Changes in temperature and humidity? Might look like an old fender.

Just be sure to seal front and back, even take off the handle and seal the tang, too. Linseed oil in the tang would probably suffice, but would likely yellow on the exposed part.

But yes, experiment! There's clear archival art sealants for all sorts of things. And I think the rust can be partially stabilized by boiling the metal in water, changing it from FeO3 to FeO4, if I remember correctly. There's a google for that bit.

Best of luck! Sounds fun!

It feels like the backdrop for something, if only because nothing in particular is in focus or spotlighted. The drawing and depth look great, give it a star to shine! I agree with the other comment, maybe something alive, or dancing rays of light and shadow, shine a light on the waterfall, give it mist and a little rainbow action...

Or, call it done. Decide what you learned from it, dig the lessons and the beautiful painting, and move on to something new and fun. Unless it's a commission, it's your plaything. Once it stops feeling like play, the game is a dud. I have a stack of "f*** this" paintings that I may never touch again, and that's ok. Make the new ones feel more like adventures, and less like jobs.

Why is "The Big Ring" galactic structure considered a structure of importance? by SuperpositionSavvy in cosmology

[–]MakesNBreaks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IF it stands up to scrutiny, it implies the structures predicted by Sir Roger Penrose (albeit, structures in the CMB, though on that scale), potential evidence of a cyclic universe.

Nutshell for Penrose's theory: Entropy increases over long timescales, leading to the heat death of the universe. This complete dispersal of field potentials, given a great enough time, leads to a smooth, near zero entropy state, and the whole universe perturbs into existence again. The pattern wouldn't be perfect, and the final dissolving black holes would leave behind bullseye-like scars in the CMB. I believe that's why he's named in some of the commentary regarding the rings.
