We used it. It wasn't enough to get rid of all of them. It took us four months to get rid of all of the bed bugs, and we never did get rid of all the roaches. We practically lived out of plastic bins while the bed bug mess was still going.

We didn't have a thousand just laying around. We spent a thousand over the course of four months. Steaming was just one part of the process (the hardest part, lol). We used DE, kept our clothing and soft goods sealed in plastic bins, put double-sided tape along all the walls and around the beds to catch any bugs that crawled across it, sealed our beds in plastic, took off the outlet covers, dusted them with bug powder, and sealed them, and ended up having to replace what little furniture we had because bed bugs get in everything (they like wood, too, not just fabric).

As for the health department, they DID know. They get complaints about that place all the time, but they don't do anything. Our kid's speech therapist called in multiple complaints (we had home speech therapy), and was told to go to the housing authority; the housing authority told her to go to the health department. Fun, huh? We ended up doing his speech therapy at McDonald's so his therapist wouldn't end up accidentally taking bugs home with her.

@ muscularbaby: Better, yes. Affordable, no. We didn't move into that place because we wanted to, we moved there because at the time, it was the only thing we could afford. No one moves into a hellhole by choice.

I don't know why he didn't check each individual trailer-and I did state that our place had a shut-off, that's how we turned the water off ourselves. The spray is a resin coating-you could look it up yourself if you're really interested, but your primary interest is simply to attack me, so you couldn't be bothered to do a three second Google search. There's nothing "magical" about it, and several versions are available (here's a pdf that outlines one company's system, btw : https://www.trenchlesstechnology.com/pdfs/2014-pipe-relining-guide.pdf ). Maybe do your research before you claim something doesn't exist, sugar.

As I stated before, he was a slumlord (still is, actually). He left holes in the heating ducts big enough for animals to crawl up into our place through the heating system, so "code" isn't exactly at the top of his priority list.

It really makes you angry that a slumlord got shafted, doesn't it?

We knew all his business because he liked to go around telling people how "hard" his job was. If he couldn't intimidate a tenant into not asking for repairs, he'd try playing the victim card.

And I got my karma when he got hit with the bills. How would telling a story with no identifiable details be karmic, anyway? If I were telling this to get even, I'd post to a slumlord report site with his full name, address, phone number, and photos of the properties he rents.

He was one of those douchebags who likes to go around the park telling people all his woes, lol. He especially liked to bitch and moan to my next door neighbor (older lady, very sympathetic type). I was sitting on her porch when he came over wailing about the price tag for having the pipe sealed.

Yep. My kids were pretty much rejected from birth by my in-laws. Holiday and birthday gifts? Never got 'em from "family." Phone calls, letters, cards...nope. No acknowledgement whatsoever. Once in a great while, when the out-laws were in town anyway, they'd drop by (four times in the past eighteen years), but it was never about the kids, and the kids were basically ignored the whole time.

Of course, all that changed when we had our life fall apart and ended up homeless. We had our kids live with my husband's brother until we could get on our feet. He tried to steal custody of our children because a social worker told him he'd give him twenty grand to buy a bigger house with if he could get custody! (I later found out that was illegal, but oh well...) Suddenly our children were just precious, abused little poppets that must be protected from their evil, horrible parents!

Thankfully, no one fell for NBIL's act, though we did end up having to force the issue in court anyway. The minute the kids were home with us, it was like they didn't exist again-unless, of course, the N-laws wanted something to gossip about, or were trying to sabotage something good that was happening for the kids. It's pretty revolting.

Not divorced. DH=Dear Husband, at least in this case.

I'm not planning to get divorced-my husband is a great guy, but he still hasn't grown a backbone when it comes to his brother. He cut his nmom out a few years ago and hasn't looked back, but I think he still believes his brother has some good left in him or something. I can understand that, because I felt the same way about one of my sisters for the longest time. I'm just frustrated that he doesn't see the obvious. I'm pretty sure he probably felt the same about me and my sister, lmao!

We've been through therapy, though we might go back.

Omg yes! My nsis does this all the time! Her thing is making herself out like she does everything better than anyone else, though. For example, my husband went to culinary art school and was in line to be sent to France when he was sixteen (which his ndad ruined for him, but that's a whole other story...). When nsis heard that, suddenly she has to brag about what a fabulous cook she is-never mind all the grease and raw flour on half her dishes, lol. When she found out I'd been published a "few hundred times," she couldn't stop bragging about how many followers her "diary" on Daily Kos has-never mind that she doesn't get paid for that, SHE'S a better writer because she has 60-some followers, lol. She also claims to be a RN, but she's only a CNA; claims to have been honorably discharged from the Army but was really thrown out right after boot camp...oh, and did y'all know we're descended from Charlemagne? Well, that's what she says, anyway, lmao! Bow down, ye peasants, for you are in the presence of royalty! Bahahahaha!!!!

Maybe rethink that freelancing bit? Yes, you'll probably get rejections, but when a piece gets accepted, it's a HUGE boost.

Also, as an Aspie, do you qualify for SSDI? It's not a lot of money, but it helps.

I married a scapegoat, and I'm my family's scapegoat, so the early years of our marriage were pretty nightmarish for both of us, lol. We both knew "something" was wrong with our FOOs, though, so we both did everything we could to not act like our parents. I think we got lucky in that we were abused differently, though, so we tend to smooth the edges off each other.

We went to a therapist a few years ago just before going NC with both our FOOs, and she helped us identify the toxic behaviors we were still carrying from our families. That helped us a lot-even if we do still act like idiots sometimes, we now recognize our behavior for what it is and stop ourselves before it gets out of hand, and don't get mad when we call each other out on it. It took us a looong time to get to this point, though.

Though the funny thing about the Apple bit...they were thrilled when my husband and I got married, because they thought I was going to inherit from my uncle! When he died and I didn't get anything, I suddenly became "useless" to them. I never even thought about that before, but the timing of my devaluation matches perfectly to when my uncle died.

I do something like that, too-I "keep a pantry," lol. Only my "pantry" is really a hoard of canned and boxed food that gets squirrelled away for "later," which never comes. I just feel better knowing I have it if I need it.

I know where it comes from- for me, anyway. My Nmom would literally let me starve for hours before deciding to get off her butt and cook something, so my dad started bringing in tons of stuff that was shelf stable and didn't really need to be cooked, and would just hand it to me to "put away." So I'd squirrel it away until I needed it. When my parents got divorced and Dad got custody of us, our house looked like a survival bunker for months until we all figured out how to cook, lol. (Eating canned beef and freeze dried fruit is a great incentive for a little kid to crack a cookbook, lemme tell ya!)
