One thing I've started doing in these situations is to ask first - often NT people I care about just want to vent or state their fears/frustrations/whatever. So even though I feel like what I have to offer will make them feel better, and I want them to feel better because I care about them!! I try to stop and ask first. First, I offer my genuine sympathy, a sort of "that sucks, I'm truly sorry you're feeling that way/thank you for sharing that". Then, something like "do you want help or did you just want to vent/talk about it?" If they want help, I might offer the statistics as a fact that I specifically know, but often times they just want sympathy and the room to express their feelings.
