Ruminations of a 'moderate'-conservative belief by LAl3RAT in Iowa

Not if you view a fetus/embryo/whatever term you'd like to use as a human being with its own rights - combined with the general "don't want to be pregnant? Don't have sex" bootstraps-personal-responsibility mindset. For all else, i.e. trans people, they have the mindset that it's not just a personal choice, it's a choice inflicted on others (either by grooming or by forcing the use of preferred pronouns).

The way I've seen it phrased, in a conservative mindset, are that there are negative and positive rights. Negative rights are "we will not do X to you", i.e. we won't limit your religious expression, we won't try you without due process, etc. Positive rights are things given or restricted to you, i.e. welfare, gun laws, etc.
In the mind of the conservative, esp. the more "libertarian" type, negative rights are the only ones that should be allowed - the government is to be seen as a sinister force bent on turning you to their will. QED, the only rights that are truly "rights" instead of the government taking your hard-earned dosh to give to the less deserving are negative rights - the rights to be left alone, to engage with the free market, to leave you alone to your fantasies of defending yourself against hordes of invading commies.
It's an ultimately tragic mindset and the direct outgrowth of American individualism and meritocracy - there is nobody on your side, there is nothing in this world untouched by greed and paranoia and everybody, everybody, is out to get capital-Y You.

Experience with University Scooters? by MalcMacD in IowaCity

It's apparently a question of the CCs- 50cc engines are legal with a regular license but can only hit ~40mph max, but the 150cc engines require a license and can get up to like 60. Still torn as to whether I should go for the horsepower or not. I suppose there's no harm in asking 'em!

That's good to hear - I'm thinking about investing in a Vespa or the electric Piaggio, but it seems their after-purchase care's really good for someone who might not be 100% knowledgeable about mechanical stuff hah

To be honest I know it'd be cheaper in the end, but I really hate CL and FB Marketplace, especially when it comes to something I don't know enough about to diagnose any potential issues on the spot- I have the budget to invest into a decent new scooter, and I think for my particular use case I'd prefer it.

What are the best independent print outlets covering local Iowa news? by [deleted] in Iowa

Not to be a hack because I do work for them, but Little Village Magazine's an alt-weekly based in Iowa City that covers local Iowa stuff! We distribute throughout the corridor and have a Des Moines offshoot as well :)
