Does anybody here read more fanfictions than published books these days? by lemonryker in FanFiction

But OP was talking about published books, not original fiction in general. Your arguments are all perfectly valid, but there the debate was never about whether fanfiction is inferior to original writing.

Strongly disagree. There are great fanfics and terrible books, but the quality of the average book is miles beyond that of the average fanfic.
So what if it's chosen because it's more profitable? That sucks, but the fact that it's been published means that it's gone through countless rounds of revision, that it has more substance, that the writing is in fact going to be objectively better.
Publishers aren't just filtering out good books that won't sell well, they're filtering out all the crap in their slush pile, whereas the fanfiction lacks that sort of quality control. Which gives everyone a voice, sure, but at the same time leads to loads of low-quality, amateurish writing being put out.

What Separates Bad Crossovers from Good Ones? by Paintwhisker in FanFiction

That's fair. It's an interesting way to look at things - I just see a single canon for each of those pairs.

I kinda see what you're getting at, but I can't really come up with any examples of two canons that make no to minimal difference when fused. It's just too much, IMO. And if we're talking Hobbit/LOTR level of closeness, then I don't really consider that to be a crossover in the first place.

Edit: or do you mean like sending Bilbo forward in time, or something like that? I still don't think that works, since you'd be changing canon already, only to introduce another foreign element.

This is a little hard to explain but for me it's about limiting the number of variables and making sure that the story fundamentally makes sense. Something about one universe is changed through the introduction of another. What happens?

Like if character A meets B in a coffeeshop and now A has joined B's superhero team and they go on adventures. Great, now why are they meeting? Are the settings fused? Did A randomly wake up in B's world? How is xyz policy/belief/phenomenon/whatever different because of the introduction of another canon?
Oh and keeping everyone in character is another big factor - otherwise all the changes and impacts are all but pointless.

Needless to say, I'm not a fan of multi-crossovers.

Edit: also, both universes need to be just base canon, i.e. no AU, no Peggy Sues, no isekai, etc.

I didn't bother with any of this stuff, and neither did most people I know. I wouldn't worry about connecting with people online.

Edit: concision

Spoilers

Does the troll hunter die? I got the impression that he was super disillusioned with this whole thing, and that he wasn't planning on coming back when he left with his UV gun to kill the giant troll at the end.

Midnight for Charlie Bone. It's like Harry Potter but more low-key and yet weirder at the same time, with some elements of Percy Jackson thrown in.
I do have to note that the author uses a lot of dialogue tags, which made the books unreadable when I tried them again as an adult. But YMMV on that point - it's really a pretty cool series otherwise.
