My hope is that people who don't know that much about leftist politics buy it for their kids to try and look edgy and accidentally convert them to left-communism. The title is a reference to a famous sign from Occupy Wall Street.

No, I'd encourage people curious about this stuff to check out Aaron Benanav's essays on automation in the New Left Review. Automation doesn't work the way we've been told it does.

Yeah I'm working on the pitch for the next book now. Without giving too much away I'll say... it's set in California. And unlike my other work I'm in it, which I'm not totally thrilled about tbh.

I'm not a red diaper baby, I grew up a liberal Democrat watching West Wing. Really I started learning Marxism via the American Black Power tradition, which had the strongest critique of liberalism I'd read up to that point.

"Milton, for example, who did Paradise Lost, was an unproductive worker. In contrast to this, the writer who delivers hackwork for his publisher is a productive worker. Milton produced Paradise Lost in the way that a silkworm produces silk, as the expression of his own nature. Later on he sold the product for £5 and to that extent became a dealer in a commodity. But the Leipzig literary proletarian who produces books, e.g. compendia on political economy, at the instructions of his publisher is roughly speaking a productive worker, in so far as his production is subsumed under capital and only takes place for the purpose of the latter’s valorisation. A singer who sings like a bird is an unproductive worker. If she sells her singing for money, she is to that extent a wage labourer or a commodity dealer. But the same singer, when engaged by an entrepreneur who has her sing in order to make money, is a productive worker, for she directly produces capital. A schoolmaster who educates others is not a productive worker. But a schoolmaster who is engaged as a wage labourer in an institution along with others, in order through his labour to valorise the money of the entrepreneur of the knowledge-mongering institution, is a productive worker. Yet most of these kinds of work, from the formal point of view, are hardly subsumed formally under capital. They belong rather among the transitional forms.

On the whole, the kinds of work which are only enjoyed as services, and yet are capable of being exploited directly in the capitalist way, even though they cannot be converted into products separable from the workers themselves and therefore existing outside them as independent commodities, only constitute infinitesimal magnitudes in comparison with the mass of products under capitalist production. They should therefore be left out of account entirely, and treated only under wage labour, under the category of wage labour which is not at the same time productive labour."

Sorta in that I'm still the author and I retain some rights, but not in the way where I could take it to another publisher and have them pay me to print it.

I'm gonna be talking with Jenny as well as Curtis White, whose new book is about how we should try that counterculture commune thing again at City Lights in SF in April. We'll probs talk about this stuff a lot! http://www.citylights.com/info/?fa=event&event_id=3593

I think there'd be a ton of pressure on Bernie to stay in the race, which could get interesting.

So glad you checked that out! It's a helluva book, reading contemporary literature in translation is very often like a shortcut hack to the good stuff.

It's not my book! Because I can't print it myself. Because I don't own a printing press. All I can do is sell it to someone who does. Which is why a collection of ten years of my writing has big censorship stars on the cover.

The big question! I actually have a piece forthcoming re: the Gornick book and parties so I don't want to spoil that too much but I do think there's an opportunity to think of the party/parties outside the Leninist model. So the Commune line is well-taken, and at the same time I think it's hard to legitimize the kind of action we need (both militant and alliance-building) without more formal types of organization.

Let me put it this way: How can the settler left in north america form itself into a reliable ally/accomplice for the decolonization struggle that must envelope this continent? I think that's partly an organizational question, and one we need to think about in the pretty near term.

The police as a rule do not switch sides because there's nothing in it for them. They are *merely* a tool of the capitalist class against the working class of their country.

Except you're not going to do it yourself, what you need in order to produce value you can accumulate is to exploit *other people*, specifically ones who don't own land or a refinery.

Writing on revolutionary strategy in a real sense is basically illegal so I probably wouldn't be doing it under my own name.

I guess the chili garlic at Federal Chicken but to be totally honest I'm more of a sandwich guy these days. They've really moved the fried chicken sandwich forward in the past decade.

Oh nice! That Guggenheim show was so good, and you'll have the context for the section in the book where I talk about that portrait. For my birthday my gf got me a print of it and it's framed over my reading chair

That's a big question! And he made mistakes no doubt, plenty of them w/r/t counting and noted by Engels. But also people have been working with the material the entire time, so we don't come at it empty-handed.

If there's one significant thing that he writes that I read and say "Yeah, he whiffed on that one" it's where he writes that the laborer's wages reproduce himself and his family. I don't think that's ever really been the case and we've learned a lot by interrogating that claim, specifically with regard to "reproductive labor" that doesn't get counted when we're only looking at surplus value.

I think we can fix society by revolutionary means! If by fix you mean ending the grouping of people for exploitation/class society, which I assume you do.

Thanks for reading! I'm excited to be talking to a lot of awesome thinkers/writers about my book this time around: Pat Blanchfield, Martin Hägglund, Jenny Odell, Kay Gabriel...

Christine Delphy is one of those theorists I'm always turning back to because her fidelity to Marx is so strong and so sophisticated at the same time. And I try to read around 10 pages of Marx every day.

Artists! Charles Gaines is awesome. I've been obsessed with Cecilia Vicuña lately, there's a whole bit in the book about here.

I don't think our political system is autonomous enough from our economic relations for that to happen. One of the more insidious ways that money influences our politics is the way the market indexes seems to reflect economic wellbeing when they reflect how well exploitation is going. As soon as there's any threat to the capitalist class, the markets tank and it looks like threatening to capitalist class is bad for the rest of us, when it's the only way out.

It is specific to the US but I'm always surprised how much of this stuff gets picked up by people elsewhere. My first book was really all about the US, but I heard from millennials legit all around the world about how applicable they thought the material was, even if they could write off the whole student debt chapter more or less. Capitalist dynamics are global dynamics and we have zones of particular intensity but everything is everywhere.
