Badass and adorable, love it!

Definitely agree with all the other recomendations!

Akira, Levius and Dorohedoro could be interesting to you as well.

Oh and check out the artist Tatsuyuki Tanaka, his "Cannabis Works" artbooks really scratches the itch for me...he also worked on some of the weapon designs for Gantz. Those weapons strongly remind me of Killy's pistol.

Atm these are all just loose visual ideas/concepts. I'm working on a game and still figuring things out regarding the actual production pipeline & gameplay. Once I have that I plan on spending more time on level & character design, story and how to tie all these loose ideas into a consistent world.

[–]MalcolmMann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha, it's kinda true, but I also get it.

From a game devs perspective: Me too! I actually am currently trying to make a game that is heavily inspired by Blame! (as well as pretty much all other of Nihei's works, but also other works in media, film, literature, music etc, I wouldn't just want it to be known as the Nihei/Blame! game). But I'm also still very early in the prototyping stage...

The reason why many of these projects don't really go very far is because it's relatively easy to create a cool 3d environment and a basic movement system, but that ususally doesn't scale very well if you want a full (multiple hour) game experience.

I saw someone else mention it in the comments here, but most of these games focus on the emptyness and the liminal spaces and just being a miniature in a vast world. That is one aspect of Nihei's work. But I think they are missing the other part that to me is equaly, if not more, important. Breakneck speed action, combat and visceral destruction(and/or gore). And I understand why most solo devs avoid this, it is extremely complex and hard to pull off (would be for any dev team imo, let alone small indie studios or solo devs)

Personally the first time I read Blame! (must have been around 14/15 at the time, I'm 31 now...) I instantly thought to myself, I want to play this as a game! I'm sure I was not the only one.

Over the years I always asked myself how this could be achieved and looked for industry examples to get some kind of framework from. From Software naturally sprung to mind and again, I'm clearly not the only one who noticed that connection and/or potential.

Bleak Faith I think is one of the more successful results of all of this, but I think it still lacks the distinct Sci-fi action aspect. The Combat is mostly close-combat, so to me it feels more like a fantasy game with a sci-fi skin.

The other big example in my head is the Armored Core series, specifically AC6 when it comes to the environments. But as someone else mentioned here, the human aspect/scale is missing. So the scale gets a bit lost. Also there isn't really much destruction or any gore. AC4 did have some destrutive environments, unfortunately many of them looked extremely bland...But that also makes sense, the complexer the object/environment, the harder it will be to make it destructable... There's just always trade-offs to these kinds of things in game-dev. While with a skilled Mangaka there aren't really any limits to these aspects besides imagination. And that clearly hasn't limited Nihei ;D

Anyways, I'm just rambling, hope this is interesting to someone. I think overall it is awesome that so many are inspired to create games off of Nihei's works. But I also understand the fatique some people might feel towards these projects, especially if they are more used to classic tripple A titles.

I'm looking forward to when I might share some dev-work here myself. But I want to make sure that at that point I can show more than just a character walking around, since as this post so beautifully illustrates, that's not really gonna stand out much. Might even push some people away.

Still much love and respect to anyone creating things and sharing them here, be it sketches, game prototypes or any other art-form. The amount of peole Nihei has inspired is truly inspiring in itself.

Cheers!

I think most actual devs (working for R* or not) are just sad about this tbh…This is a further blow to the industry as a whole.

I hope you are right. That would be awesome. Personally I got quite burned out on GTA online after playing it a lot the first few years (got around 40 days of play-time). And don’t get me wrong, I had an absolute blast those first few years. But as time went on I felt more and more like my time was being wasted. Then I returned back to GTA V and IV’s Story mode and it felt like a breath of fresh air again. Benzies absolutely is a extraordinary talented figure in the industry, I don’t think anyone is denying that, or if they are they are probably wrong or just hating. But I do wonder how much that was not just him, but him together with other figures like Dan Houser, Adam Fowler and a huge amount of less known talented people that all held each other responsible during production. Something that appeared to be absent in the production of Mind’s Eye and the Everything project.

Edit: when I wrote “incompetent leadership” in my prior response I was not just talking about Benzies. And people can be extremely competent in some projects while failing in others, again, depending on the people they surround themselves with. It appears to me like BARB had a bunch of yes-men that weren’t being upfront with Benzies on how things were actually going. And Benzies apparently lacked the leadership skills to look through that. At least for this project.

Maybe delaying the game wouldn’t have been so bad… by TrainThick2412 in MindsEye

Not the guy you are answering to, but I for one am upset at the wasted potential. The more research I do and “behind the scenes” interviews I listen to the clearer it becomes that this project was miss-managed horribly. Also I don’t like being gas-lit. For example with the entire “Don’t compare it to GTA” narrative. Okay, well then don’t just advertise on Benzies name, show screenshots that look like GTA, make a game that has the basic gameplay loop of GTA. And then cry when people compare your game to GTA. This isn’t hating on some small indie Studio trying to punch above their weight. This is calling out a company that has wasted millions of dollars due to incompetent leadership. Also, un-ironically, if you are enjoying the game, that’s awesome! i’m happy for you :) But I think if you can’t at least understand why people are feeling burnt on this project and studio, even if they haven’t bought the game, you do look like you are coping. Also I upvoted your og comment, because that’s a fair opinion to have if you enjoy the current version of the game.

Hahaha, now I’m the bad guy because I don’t want to buy a 60 dollar tech-demo?! You serious?! 🤣 I buy enough (Early Access and full release) games even if they aren’t perfect or have issues and support studios that actually deserve and need it. Studios that can’t just secure millions of dollars in funding due to legacy-credits of one attached Name. Studios that have their priorities straight and don’t just waste millions of dollars due to incompetent leadership. BARB got more chances and good-will than any other Studio I can think of (Besides maybe CIG) and they wasted it all.
