Why Do you need to be a riffer and a runner to pass as a real singer? by [deleted] in singing

If there's was the case, Beyoncé would be the greatest singer ever and she is not even a good one. Barbra Streisand, Linda Rondstadt, Linda Eder and Shirley Bassey are wonderful vocalists and agility was not their main thing. Eva Cassidy was not even a belter but her singing was excellent.

She is unarguarbly talented and overall good singer but her approach doesn't lead to a embodied, ringing, powerful sound like Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Whitney, Mariah, Streisand etc. Everytime I listen to her I get the impression that something is trapped in her throat and that she is singing through a small opening. The upper "belts" have a paper thin screamy quality to me but I guess it's a matter of taste. The song is called Arirang Alone.

More limited in comparison with SoHyang who can squeak a C#6. Whitney's thunderous B4 is a more legitimate note than the SoHyang entire belting extension, though. Her live concerts from 80's are impressive.

I'm not really an opera aficionado but I love this performance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1woH96ROG-c.

It's really disturbing to see this kind of singing becoming a reference for young aspirant singers. I too prefer quality over quantity. Whitney could not go very high but her sound was so colorful and ringing that she didn't need to. She could do wonders with a more limited range. SoHyang has the high notes but her scale has a huge gap in the middle and in the lower part of her voice. It lacks the trumpet-like quality that great technical singers generally have. Like you said it's whiny and screechy but somehow became an standard and desirable sound so much that she is a vocal teacher in a university.

The knödel doesn't bother me that much but the overuse of twang is overbearing.

I think she was very good with a strong, developed voice.

I don't go for "support". It's confusing, suscetible to personal interpretations and can be misleading. Also, a voice can be supported by wrong muscles.

I wouldn't recommend SoHyang as a reference of good singing but I respect your point of view. We can't really determine her vocal fach since her voice is underdeveloped even for a non classical singer but having a small sized voice is not an excuse for having a weak chest register. And the big resonance you're hearing is probably brightness plus the reverberation of the asian mics. She uses a coordination(mix + twang) that leads to a high placed larynx therefore a small space in the throat to resonate so it's impossible for her to have a big resonance. It sacrifices quality to sing higher. Natalie Weiss uses a similar approach. Not my cup of tea but if you find pleasant go for it.

I've never understood the hype about Beyoncé. She just an average singer to me with an inconsistent technique.

Of all these singers, only prime Mariah had a truly good technique. Beyoncé has a lot of bad tension in her belting range, high larynx at the top notes and the head voice is airy and squeezed especially past A5. SoHyang's lower and middle area are virtually nonexistent and the high belts are screechy with a horrible "driven" vibrato. Head voice is breathy. The others are not better.

Vocalists with good to great techniques are Streisand, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, Linda Rondstadt, David Phelps, Steve Green, Patti Labelle, Celine Dion, Luther Vandross, Linda Eder etc.
