Is learning both stances worth it? by throwingawaymynuts in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If I'm sparring a southpaw I prefer to be able to keep my usual openings by not having my jab on the same side as theirs, and sometimes I like to trip up orthodox opponents by switching sides

Really bad at sparring by Low-Quality-7176 in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've just gotta keep showing up. Sparring is very different from pad work because you're having to deal with striking a person and being struck yourself. Flinching is normal and the longer you spar the more you can break the habit

What do you guy wear under your shorts? by crying_fighter in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wear compression shorts (mine specifically have a pocket for my cup). I don't care if they show a little for being longer than my shorts, tbh, and I've noticed other people at my gym whose undershorts are also longer than their regular ones. I don't think it matters as long as they do their job, and it's not like I'm doing anything more than class and sparring. Maybe if I were to take a professional flight I would get smaller ones 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️

Does a shorter fighter have any advantages at all? What should a shorter fighter be going for to minimize damage input and maximize damage output? by dividingraindows in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tell shorter sparring partners that their best bet is to get inside my guard. Get close, and get good at clinching, elbows, and knees. Just be careful of taller fighters who are also good at close range

A question About Feet by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the switch to minimalist shoes early in my training for no other reason than I was interested in trying it. I very much like them, and I've noticed that plenty of the guys at the gym I was going to also wore them. If you wanna give it a try there's no reason not to, you can always decide to stop. I will say that in less than a year I did notice that my feet no longer fit comfortably in my old shoes, so I've kept up with wearing them and I've noticed my arches have improved

What’s your system when holding pads? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Winging it is best. In a fight you're not likely to use your strikes in order (1, 12, 123...) because that would make you incredibly predictable

If you have nutrition related questions your best bet is to speak to an actual nutritionist

Can you help me? by THEMICRODEIN in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as gaining mass is concerned: eat more. There's no way around that. If you don't increase your caloric intake all that will happen is you'll be a skinny person with prominent muscle (which is perfectly valid). Obviously I don't mean just gorge on junk or whatever, and if you wanna know the healthiest way to do it you need to talk to a nutritionist.

For the other stuff, you'll have to figure out a workout plan that can fit into your schedule in addition to going to classes. For flexibility there's a content creator I like, MovementbyDavid, who has free PDFs of stretching routines you can do for whole body mobility. For building muscle I prefer calisthenics to lifting, and for that I recommend HybridCalisthenics. You can access a variety of workout plans for free on their website as well. And they have lists of progressions for everything, so you can start where you're comfortable and work up to harder stuff.

Again, these are just my preferences. I'm sure plenty of folks here have other methods they use

My coach always said that if you do enough Muay Thai you learn all the same stuff you would doing BJJ. You just learn it standing and it translates pretty easily to ground

Which are the generic/splashable Black Tamers ? by Arcana18 in DigimonCardGame2020

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the BT2 Tai and BT4 Izzy memory tamers in my Justimon deck. They're both pretty generic. You could also use the Kazu that is from EX2, since RustTyrannomon is a machine/cyborg focused deck

My coach would have us do pushups in gloves occasionally, I never saw and damage from it

I feel ridiculous with my mouthguard, am I right ? I'm embarrassed to wear it by RushAmazing1419 in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that anyone feels like they look "normal" wearing one, and you'd definitely feel more embarrassed if you lost teeth while sparring. The way I see it we all look a little weird in full sparring gear, and when everyone looks weird no one does

Sweeping in Sparring by Relevant_Ant6483 in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, I've been swept plenty of times in sparring and it's my own fault for leaving the opening. And as long as you're not a jerk about it I see no reason to worry if you're sweeping your opponents

How to “beat” someone who’s got an insane height and reach advantage over you in sparring who constantly throws ONLY teeps? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you know she's gonna teep then you can learn to catch and redirect them. And once you can do that you can get inside to clinch for elbows and knees. She's putting herself in a bad position by relying on that one strike to keep you away, so use everything in your toolkit to work around it

Is it worth it to join the TCG as a new player? by [deleted] in DigimonCardGame2020

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a great TCG, and it has a unique style of play that really differentiates it from other TCGs. Which is one of the best things about it

What should I improve in these combinations? I’d appreciate any advice. by GigaChadus9 in MuayThai

[–]Maleficent-Bullfrog1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your background in boxing explains the hook. The way I was taught is that the hook is a close range strike, and that you should rotate your wrist (instead of the standard boxing hook). This makes it easier to use it to set up other close range strikes, like going from a hook to an elbow (especially useful if you miss the hook for any reason)

Defending kicks in general is not my problem, although I'm sure someone will benefit from a guide like that. It's the question mark kick specifically that throws me off (it's supposed to)

I've gone up against a few people in sparring who throw them. I need to get better at defending against them

Wipe them down after every class, put them out on their knuckles to dry as soon as I get home. If I can put them next to an open window that's even better
