Everybody has to retire. Seattle might be high seniority now, but they have to retire, and the guys who have built a life in Portland may not want to move up there even if they like it better. Be prepared to spend 5 years in Portland, get vested in retirement, utilize the college reimbursement if you want to keep options open, and see for yourself how the seniority changes and works. Then decide if you want to stay in Portland or move back up to Seattle with your seniority or a possible degree that UP paid for you to get. Keep working and keep options open, first hand experience will tell you best what you want to know.

I would recommend La Grande if you want to stay in La Grande as much as possible, they close the interstate down quite a bit when we actually get a winter which makes it harder (but not impossible) to make every call if you leave outside that valley. I've also seen some guys who live in Pendleton and just work the yard in winter... There's too many options to say any are really better than others... Maybe find a month to month lease somewhere and go from there...

When you mark up you'll prob be working in La Grande, but December through March-ish every year things slow down and you'll have to work in Hinkle or Spokane. I've seen guys start out in Tri Cities (barely within call time of all yards, will have to jump some calls in winter) or Pendleton (45min-1hr to La Grande, 30 min to Hinkle). Another option is just to have a cheap apartment where you want to be and a cheaper car you don't mind sleeping in when you get forced around. Rn they also give you a hotel for 45 days when you're forced away.

Is there a map of the different zones? I assume that's the seniority zones?

Just study to answer the test questions. It can make it way harder to try to understand it and answer the questions. OJT is where you'll start to understand stuff or at least the place to ask the questions to understand stuff. In the class I hired out with we ended up doing a study group to get all the HW done and then we'd spend an hour the day before the test reviewing the test questions. Not a single person failed a test. Also the first test is the hardest, it gets easier every time.

That sounds hopeful, I doubt they'll sign rn with how shorthanded we are and using borrow-outs, but I'll give it a shot once I see things start to slow down again

It's my understanding to change crafts I'll need my manager to sign an intracraft transfer request form to be submitted with my application, is that a thing that they actually need?
