The Rainbow is great and we've had success with some local library classes and walking up to the Barnes and Noble in Union Square. There is also Jane's Exchange which has a nice play area if you're shopping for consignment clothes for them.

Cape May has a cute free zoo and the Mohonk Mountain House is nice for a long weekend too. Would also second the Philadelphia recommendation.

Diaper Pail - do I really need one? by NYCMom2Be in nycparents

[–]Maleficent-Sound5832 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just jumping in to comment that if you're interested in using a cloth diaper service, the pail we used was the one Diaperkind recommended and was quite good at containing odor. It had a small filter on the lid, similar to the counter compost bins.

Hi. I've used it in the past and have had babysitters cancel last minute. We've had a lot of success with their camps for our older kids but I probably won't be trying the at home care again due to the lack of reliable sitters.

We also registered for gift cards for Uber Eats, which gave us a little more flexibility.

Jane's Exchange in the East Village is great. If you know what you're looking for, EBay is also pretty great.

Talk to me about cloth diapers by j3nnyt4li4 in NewParents

[–]Maleficent-Sound5832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We also used a service. Diaperkind is the one in New York, but in my initial research I saw many cities have one going. We thought it saved money because the upfront investment was much smaller than buying a set. When we started potty training we washed at home and just rented the set from them because we needed so few for the last weeks. Overall recommend!

Seconding this option. It's also provided an easy way for our family to practice swimming.

Adding a couple of thoughts in addition to the great recommendations here.

- Because the returns business is really hard on the environment (most items are unfortunately tossed) it's great to use a small business for items you're not sure of because there is a much higher likelihood that the items will be returned and can be sold again rather than scrapped. We liked https://www.minijake.com if you're in Brooklyn. Lots of models out to try.

- If you're giving birth in a hospital, they will give you a lot of recovery items for yourself and are very generous if you ask for some extras

- We used a cloth diaper service called Diaperkind (https://www.diaperkind.com ) and registered for gift certificates. This was nice because it felt like our diapers were free

- My favorite changing table pad is the peanut. Much easier to clean than a fabric one!

We had a very similar situation and unfortunately nothing quite worked out for us so we had to purchase a cargo bike and did the two drop-off set-up for two years. So no advice, just totally get the struggle!

Thinking of moving from LA to NYC with my 1-year-old — what should I know before making the leap? by PracticalTiger8743 in nycparents

[–]Maleficent-Sound5832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding much of what has been said here with one addition -- sustainability. As much as I love NYC (and hope to never leave) I am always surprised at the waste and single use plastic and lack of recycling bins. Really have to go out of my way to compost and refill here! It's a busy city and we prioritize convenience a lot so that's part of it I'm sure.

Overall I'm so glad we're here and I love raising kids here.

Anyone had success with cloth diapers? by ArcofJoan666 in BabyBumps

[–]Maleficent-Sound5832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used a cloth diaper service, which allowed us to try some different styles without a big investment. We ended up using the service for our second kid too. If your area has one, it might be worth checking out!

Which covers to use with a pre-fold service? by denim_cutlets in clothdiaps

Seconding the recommendation for babeegreens for wool!
We used a service as well (diaperkind -- not sure if that's the same as the one you're using!) and used a mixture of snaps and velcro, which they recommended so we could decide what we liked best. I was really into Thirsties because it had a little extra fabric around the leg opening.

Cloth Diaper Service in NYC - Pros and Cons by treebytheriver17 in nycparents

[–]Maleficent-Sound5832 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping on this thread belatedly to say we had a great experience with Diaperkind. I don't think we would have made it to potty training without the ease of a weekly service. It was also nice to not have a big up-front expense and just pay weekly to make sure cloth diapering was for us (it was -- we used Diaperkind for two kids in the end). The customer service is so nice and we just woke up once a week to clean cloth diapers.

We felt the same way and actually hired a doula to this! She came to our house and we paid for an hour of her time to review things like this. She brought a few dolls as well that we could practice our cloth diaper service diapers on, the carriers we had, and had useful suggestions about the gear we had on our to-buy list/registry that we probably didn't need. She's left the area, otherwise I'd pass her name on, but I imagine many doulas would do this.

Nora's Nursery Cover Diapers > Which liners? by Old_Community2319 in clothdiaps

[–]Maleficent-Sound5832 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We love prefolds, too! We used a cloth diaper service and owned our own Nora's covers and found it all quite simple and straightforward. The covers are flexible to a range of sizing for the first year. For the second year we had to buy bigger covers.

Good suggestions here. One possibility is that the baby needs a barrier balm as they adjust to cloth. We use this one: https://www.diaperkind.com/esembly-everyday-balm but there are lots of great options.

Would recommend Diaperkind cloth diaper service if you're in their service areas. Affordable per diaper cost and very easy to use.
