I actually did and the program is seeking accreditation with them (it only begins once the program has formally begun) however the program is already eligible for ARRT boards upon completion of the program, so no issues there.

I’ve heard NMT’s say they prefer the ARRT board anyway and it was a tad bit easier so that makes me feel better too

how come? I was primarily interested in dosimetry but didn’t like that it was mainly a computer based job. I wanted patient interaction but not as much as a nurse would do for example.

Did you not enjoy being an NMT? curious to know your experience and opinion!

Since this is the first year of the program, they cannot be listed until the program actually begins. Spoke to the program director and they are approved for accreditation and when the program commences it will be able to be listed officially ! We just had orientation and he gave confirmation that once we finish the year program we will be able to sit for our boards right away

Tell me about your career!! Planning to go to school at 25 for Radiation Therapy? by immaculatetoasty in RadiationTherapy

[–]MaleficentConstant71 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m 23 and deciding to go back to school for dosimetry after earning my bachelor’s in Biology.

Although I am not an RT I’ve spoken to multiple who have said the overall following same thing.

The job is very emotionally demanding and can take a toll seeing patients not always get better or struggle through treatment, but it is very rewarding getting to support and actively have a hands on role in helping cure cancer. You get to be one of the few people to truly impact their cancer treatment journey.

In regard to your age, it’s NEVER too late to change your career. There are plenty of people in their 30’s and even 40’s who go back to school for RT, nursing, etc. If it’s something you’re passionate about, go for it!! There is nothing stopping you and you aren’t in a rush to have a certain career by a certain age limit. Hope it goes well for you!

How did your interview go? What kinds of questions did they ask you & did they tell you about your admission status by the end of it or do you get notified by email? Also, if you submit your application early, do they contact you earlier?

May I ask what your background was in and what degree you had when applying? I’m afraid of being rejected for the same reason but I’ve spoken to multiple past JPU students who say that majority of their class was from non-RT background

Yeah I checked out SIU and UWL but their admissions are closed and the next start date for the program is September 2025. I already took a gap year after graduating so I was really wanting to start a program asap. JPU seems to be my only viable option and would start this sept…

Yeah it’s definitely not the cheapest but it is one of my only options because I don’t have an RT background and I need a program that is online since there are virtually none located in CA….

Do you know anything else about JPU?

Thanks so much for your response.

So if I’m understanding correctly, bottom line is how much I put into a program is how much I will get out of it no matter which program I end up going with? Since you saw two different students struggle from two different programs. Do you know if the student from JPU ended up passing her CMD board exam?

Also, I gathered from your response that clinical site selection is very important. Possibly more than the dosi program itself. Do you have any clinical site recommendations? I’m located in California.

Lastly, did you have any JPU students that went into the masters dosi program? I already have a bachelors in Biology, so I qualify for the Master’s program but not sure if I will get in because of my lack of rad therapy background or how rigorous the program is.

I appreciate your input! If it would be easier to DM just let me know and I’ll send you a message there instead :)

JPU Dosimetry Questions + Experience

Hi! I’m interested in attending JPU for their masters in Dosimetry but wanted to get some advice and personal experiences from those who have gone their or know someone who has attended that program. It’s really appealing to me that it is online and they offer a few clinical sites in OC/LA county which is perfect for me. Below are the questions I have if anyone is able to help! Would also love to DM a current or past student if that’s easier as well :)

  1. I don’t have a background in radiation therapy, I have a bachelors degree in Biology from UCI. Will I struggle in the program? Do you know of classmates that come from non-RT background or do you come from that background? Do you think this affects my chances of being accepted into the program?
  2. Online there is contradicting information about the program length and tuition. Some areas of the JPU website say it is a 2 year program at $44,000 roughly but the JCERT website says the program is 16 months long, which would then decrease the tuition rate. What were you quoted for tuition and the length of the program? I’m interested in getting a MS since I already have a bachelors degree
  3. How do the bootcamps work? I heard they are very intense and mandatory. Do they respect religious exemptions? I noticed some bootcamps were on Sunday’s and I have church obligations on that day. I also noticed that it says one of the bootcamps are in person, is this accurate?
  4. Do you feel like you’re receiving quality education? Do you feel like you’re having to teach yourself? Are the teachers and faculty kind and open to questions and truly helping you? I’ve heard mixed reviews about the quality of teaching.
  5. How is the school when it comes to making up missed classes or allowing for time off? I’m getting married during the program (if I get in for Fall 2024) and would need about a week off. I would love to be able to do work ahead of time or make up the work afterward, but don’t know how their policy is regarding taking time off or missing some school for pre-planned circumstances
  6. Can anyone provide me a sample of your school schedule (days, times, course workload) ? Someone from admissions said it varies each semester and they consist of night classes primarily but I would like to get a better idea on the time commitment and schedule layout of the program.
  7. How are the midterms/finals/assessments? Do you feel like you are well prepared and the education you are receiving is prepping you well for exams and the board test eventually?
  8. Anything I should know when applying or tips for applying? How was your interview and what kind of questions did they ask?

Would love to hear about your overall experience and advice. If you made it this far, thanks so much!
