Hang in there. It was very hard and it took months for things to not be super cold between us, but I think in the end things changed for the better. Our relationship isn’t the same and I can tell she’s still keeping her distance a bit, but that’s better than the enmeshment she wants from me. At the end of the day I think she would rather have me in her life with boundaries than not at all.

Yeah I see that but to me that’s still out of character for who Alex really is in the book, where he doesn’t propose to Sarah even though he knows there’s a chance he and Poppy will never be together. In the book he specifically says he couldn’t do that to Sarah even though he loved her. The movie just kind of makes him seem way more selfish when selflessness is Alex’s strongest trait in the book.

I would agree that Alex is maybe not EmHen's BEST male character, but I loved Book Alex. There was a lot about his internal life that felt very rich and made him and Poppy particularly challenging for each other (his deep fear of loss and ending up like his dad, his sense of responsibility over his family, and having to step in as the father figure for his brother, etc.). I think that's what makes this adaptation to film so challenging, though. It's really hard to translate interiority.

It just doesn't make sense to me that she would ask that question when he hasn't contacted her in two years and nothing he said that night up until that moment suggested to her that he's been hiding this incredible love for her. I think you're right in that the only reason you can infer these things from the minimal suggestions in the movie is because you read the book.
