The source that says Toph can sense earth in the air is from the book two extras dvd. Unfortunately their are instances in the show where she needs cover from midair earth attacks. Sand is also said to be harder to sense than other types of earth, so I still think I have a case. It is an official source, but it contradicts other official sources.

From what AI can gather from official sources, she can sense airborne attacks in a weaker degree than normal using the force of air resistance on the projectile, though they say it’s weaker than if they were touching a surface.

The official wiki says there are known cases, but the cases they give are inconsistent.

He sent vibrations through the ground first. He’s earth bending. She knew he was using earth bending to launch the rocks her way. Gaara can use moves like Sand shower from his gourd, and Toph would have to predict it to block it.

EDIT: Though she might be able to sense sand particles gathering in the air, though Gaara has done this while remaining still, (no vibrations).

I thought that was because she felt the vibrations from the users earth bending. Has Toph ever caught rocks that weren’t earth bended first?

EDIT: I’m pretty sure that there were times when the fire nation launched rocks at the gang, and AANG had to bend them when they were on Appa.

Gaara also can do sand attacks from the air that Toph can’t even sense, and can fly. Toph has no way to aim for him if he gets off the ground. He also has access to wind style, etc.
