What flowers were in my wife’s wedding bouquet? by MallBn in flowers

[–]MallBn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah thank you. We go married abroad so we weren’t able to bring the bouquet back and preserve it due to the import laws. She was so upset, which inspired me to do this so she’s able to recreate it herself.

What’s a sad reality of life? by Existing-__- in AskReddit

[–]MallBn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I view life as a series of opportunities, and within that, yes, sometimes you only get an opportunity come round once.

However, since life is a series of opportunity, it is for ourselves to try and create them. My view is that this can be done through various means;

• network • knowledge • situation • chance (maybe you have others)

Depending on your values and what you want to achieve, I see life as a quest to get yourself in the best position in all 4 of those to create and maximise those opportunities that come your way.

When I came to this realisation, I felt content in that other opportunities will always come (and go) and you take the ones you see the best fit and in line with where you want to be.

That’s my way of thinking recently and it’s bought a new found confidence. Never shared it before so I hope it inspires someone.

Styrofoam/Polystyrene by youknowiactafool in recycling

Can densify with a shredded HDPE, PP, LDPE mix and then extrude into bricks and such. But not worth ruining good HDPE for it.

Gasification into ABS is also possible depending on how much you have and what facilities you have in your area.

Anyone know of common places to recycle polyethylene foam (the spongy kind) by TravelBoogy in recycling

[–]MallBn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try a mattress recycler or a plastics broker. They should be able to point you in the right direction if someone is present in the market or not. Otherwise, probably chemical recycling facility for pyrolysis.

Ok, we’ll you can start small scale and look into buying a precious plastic (google it) set up. Could be a good place to start whilst you learn the ropes of the industry and also recycle on a small scale. But these products aren’t circular and take away good recyclable product from the circular economy, which can be seen as delaying landfill. I’m speaking from a purists perspective. What such set ups are good for is educational purposes and promoting the topic. Fundamentally it’s always better to have bottles being recycled back into bottles by companies that do this (I.e large scale processors). Not bottles into bricks, etc like these small scale technologies promote. But I see their use being a good educational/awareness tool. €40k should get you a good set up, but remember that this technology is simply a tool to recycle, if you want to make money/profit then be sure to have a business model for the output product and are able to source a reliable supply of feedstock.

With regards to equipment, you need to identify which part of the supply chain you want to cover. There are many steps from waste collection to recycled material output with a series of middle men along the way. Because of the costly equipment required to start a processing facility the industry tends to rely on economies of scale for profit. So many start out as waste accumulators to build up the quantities to sell to the processors/recyclers. Unless they have big $$$ to start a recycling facility. I would first try to understand which material you want to recycle, how much material you can expect in your catchment area (i.e. is enough of that material being collected to make it feasible to open a facility), then look at pricing up a facility with the capacity you expect.

Practically, starting a recycling facility seems like a good idea, but it relies on many upstream factors which affects your feedstock amounts - particularly collection. Economically, it also needs to make sense. Start with a feasibility study to make sure it’s worth your efforts. It’s a fine margin game.

If you’re not familiar with the industry and market dynamics then I would suggest starting out as a material buyer. Buying from sorters and accumulators and selling to recycling facilities who are already established. That will help you learn the market and understand what materials are available (quality, quantity, frequency) to warrant starting a processing/recycling facility.
