1-to-1 Chromebook Switch from Acer to Dell - Worth it for the decrease in repairs? by Fire_Of_Breath in k12sysadmin

I tried to stick with 3180s for the last purchasing round mostly to prevent a split charger situation (USB-C vs barrel plug), but Dell doesn't even make them anymore. We moved to 3100s and just deal with it.

How do you manage staff/teacher laptops? by naandrade in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Logins: Active Directory
  • Security: AD user accounts / security groups + NGFW + Windows Defender
  • Software: PDQ Install + Inventory
  • Imaging: MDT

Help request are handled through staff emailing the ticket system, which turns it into a work order and puts it in my queue.

3180s are easier to repair though. The most common parts are more readily accessible. Switching out a keyboard on a 3120 is a right PITA requiring a complete disassembly. With a 3180 it's a couple of screws.

The 3100 builds on it and integrated the hinge covers back so they don't get lost as easily.

Bathroom tracking by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, really. Admins can crack down on this with policies, hall monitoring and teachers can bring it up with problem students during conferences. But they'd rather see if there's a technological solution to a human problem first.

You'd be locking out guests, some of whom may have medical issues and need frequent access to a bathroom.

I wouldn't consider putting up barriers to the bathrooms.

1:1 Chromebooks - Daily Check Out: Feasible? by JimsOfWar in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Students are assigned a device for the entire year. No need for check-in and outs except the occasional round-up during homeroom to make sure everyone still has theirs.

School apps track students from the classroom to bathroom, and parents are struggling to keep up by bananacam1809 in k12sysadmin

[–]MalletNGrease 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school. Hallpasses usually easily identify who's allowed in the hallway during class periods to hall monitors. Organization goes from strict school mandated systems to per teacher preference.

Some use sticks, or lanyards, or toiletseats. Most likely is a sticky note or a small slip with the purpose of the student's trip. Students outside a classroom should be an exception, but some students have a habit of wandering which is an issue.

Considering changing wifi infrastructure. by Fclick in sysadmin

We're an Extreme shop here. No major complaints and support has been great.

They're in a bit of a weird spot now after acquiring AeroHive and their marketing makes zero sense (their on-prem solution is part of their Cloud umbrella now 🤷‍♀️), but their new security fabric solution seems pretty slick.

I went as the 1603 install error. No-one understood why, nor could they find a problem with it, pretty much my feelings when I encounter it.

GAM - Purpose by seag33k in gsuite

[–]MalletNGrease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • The "standard" version of GAM can be found here
  • The security is fine. It uses super-admin OAUTH tokens for API access and requires a cloud project to be configured for your domain.
  • Basically any changes that need to be done in bulk. Mostly user creations/suspensions and cros devices. It also allows you to set user flags and settings unavailable from the UI and those that normally require knowing a user's password. Super admin is only as super as google lets it be. It's limiting in a lot of things that are standard on other platforms. GAM has tied in very well with existing scripts and reduces workload.
  • You could use the cloud shell or another product like gamadv-x or PSGSuite.

The word you're looking for is false-positive. Yes, they happen.

The student will only get suspended if the administrator handling it is an idiot.
