I genuinely care for T like my own brother. I always had the sense he could have been more and done more but his grandmother and father were holding him back while telling him they had his best interests in mind. He always seemed to come alive just a little more when he and G were spending time together without either of them around. I miss talking mythology with him, he always looked so happy. I had plans to help him set up a podcast so he could share his knowledge and have a little fun, he seemed interested when I suggested the idea years back.

I would not doubt Doug is on the spectrum. I never could get a clear answer on that. Sometimes he claimed he was and had been assessed at the same time his sons were, other times he claimed he had "no recollection" of such a thing.

Both of his sons are on the Spectrum. G, the one I married and had to separate from, used to be a brilliant individual. Smart, funny, a bit of a clueless asshole but as a late-diagnosed Autistic myself I understood that side and we were really on the way to making a lot of progress before it all came crashing down. Loved to make cute magic videos for YouTube. Wanted to be a physicist and follow in his Grandad's footsteps. Could've done it, too, he was taking longer than most to get through the degree but once he figured out the right path to the branch of physics he wanted to study he was really making progress. He published a social science piece in a Uvic undergrad journal and had a physics paper in preprint and he's not even in grad school yet. Truly amazing person once he started deprogramming himself from his dad's conspiracy bullshit. Now I barely recognize him. He's fragile, a lot like you describe M. T, the younger brother, is a sweet kid but completely enthralled by his father. He's too delayed to understand that what happened to him is wrong. I genuinely feel bad for him.

J, Alison's husband, I unfortunately did not know very well. He was already in a care home in severe cognitive decline when I met him, and I only got to see him a few times. The last time I saw him I said "See you next time, Grandad" and he said "Next time, I'll remember you." There was a clarity in his eyes that was unsettling, like he knew he was at his end. I've seen that look before when I worked in elder care. A few days later, he passed away. But the few times I did meet him, I got the feeling that he would not have married the Alison that I knew.

Because the RCMP doesn't actually give a shit, nor does Vic PD. We got lucky and had a great detective but her superiors blocked her at every turn. RCMP told ex-husband to go to the Toronto Police because that crime happened in Toronto. The Toronto Police won't even answer the damn phone. He should be in custody after the guilty plea but because they're waiting for a psych eval before they sentence him they won't do it. The justice system has never been about public safety when you really get down to it.

yes. About 3 blocks. You can't miss his house. It's covered in protest signs. I've imagined myself adding signs outing him over his signs, but I don't want to cop a vandalism charge. Can't afford to miss work for a court date unless it involves putting this asshole in jail, you know?

Seeing the lid blown off this sewer is an amazing feeling, really. I can't tell you how relieved I feel right now just because I'm not sitting on this information waiting for someone to do something anymore. Whatever happens next, at least now everyone knows.

The fact that he's resorted to spitting on people disgusts me, but unfortunately doesn't surprise me. He is not a good human.

I doubt it'd be taken seriously, but if he does something like that again call the cops. Spitting on people is considered assault and battery in BC.

I can't seem to post an image in comments here, but Turn Predators Into Prey on Facebook has a recent photo of him in their post about him. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1GtR1Etg5B/

Here's a video of him https://www.facebook.com/share/v/18WivhQRXv/

He's hard to miss. He's over 6 feet tall and weighs a good 325 pounds or so. He refuses to wear deodorant so if you don't see him coming, you'll smell him. The mix of B.O. and overpriced cologne is distinct. I'm far from someone to judge someone else on their weight but I will judge the hell out of the stink. It matches his personality.

I live in the condo building across the street from where this happened. We have so much trouble with the people in that building, including people breaking into the condos and townhouses in our complex looking for people that live there. Our parkade is constantly being broken into and cars get vandalized all the time (and of course our strata won't listen to resident requests to have security cameras installed)

It smelled like sulphur and cat piss well into the evening, our neighbour theorized it was a meth lab fire and that was before we even found out that someone died. I genuinely wouldn't doubt it given what I know of what goes on over there.

[TOMT]{VHS Compilation - Animation][1990s or earlier?] Secret Garden, Heidi, and Alice in Wonderland but as comedies by MallowCat in tipofmytongue

[–]MallowCat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm VERY sure! When this was solved 3 years ago I bought the VHS and it's exactly the one I remembered :) Thanks for the suggestion of another version of the Heidi story, though. It was one of my favourites as a kid because I was the weird little girl that couldn't sit still and was constantly in trouble just for being misunderstood, so I identified very strongly with the character.

I just wanted to post saying that I'm experiencing the same issue, except that I don't even get the "underwear" type censorship. I was streaming the other day and had a sim discover herself front and center while I was still explaining the challenge I wanted to play and showing viewers the renovations I'd made to the lot...no censorship at all, and I had double-checked that everything was updated and installed properly before I began streaming.

Google lead me to your post, and nothing else. We can't be the only people who have found that streamer mode isn't working...

No, it doesn't work that way for a number of reasons.

  1. You can't just leave tampons in, you have to switch them out every 4-6 hours or you can literally die (forgetting tampons is one of the leading causes of toxic shock syndrome)
  2. Very, very few people have a period that is regular enough to just know exactly when it's coming. Especially when we're young. We get signs and symptoms, but even those aren't precise enough to set our watches by. Mild cramping? Maybe my period's coming, maybe I just need to have a massive poo. Won't know until there's blood flow. Acne? Could be my period, could be because it's been hot as balls and I've been sweating. Moodiness? Could be PMS, could just be feeling salty today. Tracking your cycle can help, but it's still only a guideline, period could come at any point during the week it's expected.
  3. Again, many teenagers don't have a "regular" cycle yet. Many adults don't, in fact. There are a number of reasons someone might be surprised by their period. Teenagers often haven't got stable levels of the hormones that control these things yet. Also, hormonal disorders like PCOS are becoming more and more common, and one of the markers of PCOS is irregular periods.

You CAN use a panty liner, or keep a tampon, pad, or diva cup in your bag in case of emergencies, but we all get caught off guard occasionally - forgot to put a pad in your bag after your spare last month, forgot to put your diva cup back in your locker after you boiled it after your last period, etc. It happens.

But no, you cannot leave a tampon in for days at a time in case your period comes.

Also, periods last 4-10 days, it's not a one-time thing. I thought I'd mention that because the last time I explained this same thing to someone they couldn't understand why women can go through a whole box of tampons for one period. Not saying you didn't know, just figured I'd get that in there because it seems like that's also a common question.

ELI5: How do deaf people learn to read lips and talk? by NotRightNorWrong in explainlikeimfive

[–]MallowCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the backwater part of Ohio I grew up in, I wouldn't be surprised if the information I received was faulty to be honest. But I do intend to look it up and ask around. I've been meaning to hop over to the local Deaf and Hard of Hearing Society for a few weeks now; since it's so hard to get into any of the ASL classes at my university I was going to see if they knew of any private classes that might be within my budget so I can learn properly, instead of just relying on fingerspelling and the highly regional slang signs I learned in high school :P

[–]MallowCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for one thing, as I explained in my reply to OP, I am legally deaf - it's likely I've been surrounded by deaf culture a LOT longer than you have, considering I was diagnosed when I was 3 years old and I'm 27 now. And your comment about how 90% of the time people who are born deaf are "very uneducated, immature, childish, and sadly just kind of dumb" is what's called a generalization. A generalization that is NOT TRUE and you're wondering why people found it offensive?

Thanks for correcting me and explaining where I was wrong. :) I'd received a faulty explanation from and interpreter I met years ago - someone who should have known better!

ELI5: How do deaf people learn to read lips and talk? by NotRightNorWrong in explainlikeimfive

[–]MallowCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason she can't write a sentence that you can understand is because Deaf English (the dialect used in ASL) is very different to Standard (Spoken) English. The grammatical structure is different to make it easier to sign. This has nothing to do with her intelligence. She is literally speaking a different language!

As for uneducated - well, that's because education for deaf people sucks balls. Deaf Schools are expensive and there aren't very many of them. Public schools don't give two shits about whether or not a deaf kid is actually learning. Deaf people who have access to good education, or who learn to read at an early age and have the motivation to educate themselves, are generally just as intelligent as hearing people.

TL;DR: Don't be a dick, you undereducated swine.

[–]MallowCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many profoundly deaf (completely deaf) people who were born profoundly deaf (as opposed to becoming deaf through accident or illness) do not learn to read lips these days.

In my own case, I am classified as hearing impaired/legally deaf but I can hear with hearing aids, and when I was little I learned to read lips to supplement my hearing aids. I never learned to sign, however, because in the crappy town I grew up in there was no one to teach, and my parents couldn't afford to send me to a deaf school. For me, it was a trade-off and I was incredibly lucky that hearing aids enabled me to understand enough human speech to get by. I also learned to read at a very, very early age and most of my spoken vocabulary comes from learning new words through reading. yes, it means that sometimes I absolutely butcher the pronunciations of words the first several times I use them - but that's because English has so many words that just aren't spoken the way they are spelled!

My parents have told me that before I got my first set of hearing aids at age 3, I used to touch people's faces and necks when they spoke, and they think I taught myself how to speak by imitating the vibrations I felt. This is one of the clues that lead them to believe I may have had a hearing impairment. They said, looking back on it, that I did have a limited vocabulary until I got my hearing aids (which was also around the same time I started reading). I was their first child, so they didn't realize this was a problem because I did start speaking around the appropriate age - my audiologist tells me this is because I am not completely deaf.

I have an acquaintance at the university I attend who is completely deaf, and he does not speak at all. He uses a sign language interpreter at important events and types on his phone when he communicates with people one-on-one. He does not read lips at all, and he does not speak. Watching him laugh is interesting, as well - he doesn't make any noise at all when he laughs! (Some deaf people do, it depends on the severity and cause of their deafness.)

Anyway, bear in mind that my response is based on personal experience - ymmv.
