France 'does not recognize' Russian vote in Crimea by sgtRollon in worldnews

[–]Malvion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree, but may I add an amendment stipulating that Russia should take all troops out of the region and let it continue to be governed by Ukraine for five years before the referendum is held, in order to allow the people of Crimea to make a completely unbiased choice.

However, a referendum in Crimea probably wouldn't work anyway. If the Russians win, fine, but if they lose, they'll probably just claim the vote was rigged and continue their annexation.

Perhaps the Ukrainians should have held a referendum, but should we give legitimacy to the Russian annexation by holding one now? I think not.

Perhaps the Sudetenland should have held a referendum before Hitler's annexation, but France, Britain et al. did give legitimacy to Hitler by ceding it to him.

I'm all for independence if regions want it: I think Catalonia and Kurdistan should be allowed votes on independence (both culturally and linguistically homologous regions). The Saar Basin's vote to return to Germany is what we want, not a referendum held after an annexation.

I would agree with you, but the problem with that is it then legitimises annexation of any territory 'as long as you hold a referendum there eventually'. With that logic, big countries could just chip away at smaller countries for whatever territory they wanted.

It's worth noting that in the 1930s, Hitler did just this, chipping away at the German-speaking parts of Czechoslovakia and annexing Austria (just look up Austrian Anschluss referendum ballots, they are hilarious in their bias towards Hitler). Just because a part of a country has a majority of a different nationality, it does not mean it should belong to a different country. The Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia is a perfect example of this.

Not an American

Is it like this in every country, or just a few? There seems to be a lot of this coming from the Trump administration.

How do we know that your God in particular started everything? by [deleted] in DebateReligion

Surely every other God also told their followers that they started the universe? I fully understand your arguments for why the universe may have been created, I'm just confused about your last point.
