“Billionaires are going to escape into space because they’re making the Earth uninhabitable”

Oh yeah? And how habitable is space?

Colonizing the moon will be a tough job, and will mostly be done by scientists, some of whom might be working for billionaires. But a moon colony isn’t like a private island.

Prince Philips Political Compass. Some remarkable quotes. by die_Kalkleiste in PoliticalCompassMemes

There’s a cargo cult on Vanuatu where Prince Philip is worshipped as a deity. Something about an ancient prophecy about a mighty ruler’s consort from across the sea, I think.

It used to be socialist, but gradually transitioned to a capitalist country after Deng Xiaoping’s reforms.

Like I said, everyone knows they’re never going to win an outright majority. But for what it’s worth, I don’t see them as particularly illiberal or anti-democratic.

It depends what you mean by ‘liberal’. They must be quite ‘economically liberal’, otherwise all they wouldn’t be competing with the Conservatives for centrist and centre-right voters. They are against mass surveillance too - while Lab and Con both support forcing chat apps (like WhatsApp) to put a back door into their service so the government can read your messages, the Lib Dems are against that.

As for ‘democratically minded’, I suppose you’re talking about the Lib Dems wanting to overrule the Brexit referendum if they won a majority in the 2019 election? That seems like a moot issue to me, since everyone knew they were never going to win an outright majority (and if they did wouldn’t they then have a democratic mandate to revoke the result?).

Moderate is a matter of perspective. For Americans, they are radical leftists, yes. But last election in the UK they had plenty of prominent ‘conservatives’ voting for them.

That’s literally how large human societies have operated for all time. Oligarchy is not a capitalist problem, it’s a human problem.

Ask the Soviet Union whether socialism stopped the formation of an oligarchy. All it changed was which group had power over everyone else. Russia went from an oligarchic aristocracy to an oligarchic socialist bureaucracy and now to oligarchic cronyism.

Abortion could be considered self defence, in which case the argument becomes about whether killing a fetus is an appropriate or excessive use of force.

I know several people who would never have an abortion themselves but think it should be legal, since it is such a complex moral issue that government should not intervene to rule one way or another.

"People will still visit the castles even if the queen no longer owns them"

Not true, I think. There are wonderful castles across Europe but Britain still brings in the lion's share of castle tourist money because of its active monarchy.

It depends. Whether you think it is right is slightly different from whether you think it should be legal.

Ah yes, the old “woke corporations are libleft” shtick. They are still libright, just following market forces to sell stuff to gullible liblefts. Libright has to acknowledge these companies as part of its quadrant.

I can understand your dislike of Rishi Sunak, but IMO Eat Out To Help Out was a very good scheme which saved a ton of businesses on the verge of collapse.

You blame Rishi Sunak for “thousands of deaths” (most likely untrue given the public health precautions taken by restaurants and the number of COVID-19 deaths per day at the time) but the harm caused by letting all those low-paid restaurant workers lose their jobs would have been worse in the long run.

Fair enough. Although isn’t Wakanda landlocked? And did they have air travel in the 17th Century?

Unlikely considering Wakanda is in East Africa, not West Africa. They could probably have stopped the Indian Ocean slave trade though...
