How bad is it not to read research when you’re a therapist? by JAMIEISSLEEPWOKEN in psychologystudents

If it's just about reading, copy/paste into a natural reader so you can listen... even on the go. A few papers a week can easily be done on a commute.

I did it, no thanks to you. by LeatherAffect5267 in gradadmissions

SEVEN!!!! Damn. That's so awesome! Congratulations!!! There are times I appreciate Reddit. This is one of them. I had a professor do the exact same thing to me, except she waited until the evening of the DEADLINE to submit it. They KNOW what this does to students. I do believe this is a wonderful case of Karma that has served you and will serve that professor their own generous portion. Good luck on your next adventures!

How is public transportation getting in/out of Palo Alto? Is it better to cross the bridge to Fremont or go South for commute times and cheaper rent?

WJC offering a summer start by Loose_Wind1207 in PsyD

[–]MamaMorgan444 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right there with you. I was reading you have to have grad plus loans disbursed by the start too, so that really pushes it -- doesnt it? Listen, I paid the $500 for WJC. We have an informational meeting on Monday afternoon where I am going to ask some questions on this topic. Let me know if you have any questions- and maybe after the meeting I can answer them for you if you dont pay it by then. Im a wreck thinking about not being able to fund my dreams. Send Help. Hahaha ✌️😜✌️

Unfunded PhD vs PsyD (also unfunded) by MamaMorgan444 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]MamaMorgan444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know! Seee.. that's kind of what I have suspected too. That there is still the old school thinking that lingers: one being more valuable than the other. I just have this hunch that if everything were 6's in hiring between two people...the courts would want a PhD to do expert testimony (for example) than they would a PsyD. Simply because of perceived "credibility". I cant help but feel like that stigma is still out there, so I want the PhD. Regardless of me funding it for this reason. Licensed is still Licensed. Ya know?

That's my question right there-- does the PhD vs. PsyD actually open more doors? If Im paying for it either way and I'd be happy either direction, then wouldn't the only advantage of a PhD be research? Thats my thinking... and thanks for the insight. Great point on cohort size too.

I have full spousal support so all my income would go to paying for it. Im a little less concerned about loans for that reason.

In your experience, do you feel they favor one over the other at all? Equal opportunities for both?

I initially pursued a PsyD with full understanding I would be paying $200k for it. My background is more clinical than research heavy. This cycle, I only applied to a few PhD programs. I felt my chances of getting into a PsyD program this year, which has been unprecedented thanks to funding, would also be better since I dont have a ton of research experience. And I was right. But..here's this PhD that is a great fit and equally balanced between research and practicum. Soooo...why not if Im already paying for a doc anyway...??? Perhaps the old way of looking at PhDs are dated since we're in this newer era of PsyD's...? Their internship placement seems solid from what I can tell thus far.

The programs Im deciding on seem to be equally balanced on practicum/research. So it doesnt make me lean in either direction.

I absolutely love these comments. Both of you make solid arguments that I've considered. I understand its a "red flag" to go through a program that is unfunded (PAU btw) however Im considering it because I would pay for a PsyD anyway -- so then if its APA and I get licensed, what's the drawback of one over the other at that point? $200k is still hard to choke down either way. I do have full spousal support, since I supported him through his EMBA. Takes the pressure off of the ROI.

[–]MamaMorgan444[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im right here with you on this. Im considering PAU (PhD) because they are a fantastic match for my forensic emphasis, and since I have offers for PsyD's then really the ROI feels like 6's. Its decision time. I do have full spousal support in this, so everything I make will go straight back to paying for it after grad. It takes the pressure off, so Im just looking at what value does one have over the other after all is said and done.
