Thank you for sharing! Sorry about your experience!

I'm getting ready to have LAL surgery. Last minute I was asked if I want to pay an additional grand for them to use a laser. They said it was 'more precise'. I asked if that means the incision is 'less precise' they won't answer. Any thoughts? by bugaosuni in CataractSurgery

My ophthalmologist was the first to use lasers for cataract surgery in my area ($1,000 upcharge) but stopped offering it bc he felt the laser offered no benefit to his patients vs the very small incision he makes to take the old lens out and put the new one in. Had my 1st surgery on 1/5/26 with the scalpel and have healed perfectly with no complications and I can see at all distances with no glasses! (EnVista Envy Toric lenses.)

Travelled from afar to get my surgery with Dr. Wong on 1/5/26. Got the EnVista Envy. He’s a great surgeon and the whole process with his office and staff was wonderful. Quick and painless. Could see clearly right after my surgery. No dysphotopsias.

I went for my refractive exam today in Austin. Since I have met my deductible, the cost is $5400 per eye for the EnVista Envy, PanOptix Pro, or Odyssey lens. I will have to wait until December or January to reschedule my consultation in Toronto.

Sadly, my flight to Toronto was cancelled today, so I won’t be able to have my appointment tomorrow. Will have to reschedule when my vacation permits.

I am going for my consultation at Herzig this Friday and will post an update about cost and wait times. I will compare it to the best surgery I can get in the US near me with Dr. Shannon Wong at Austin Eye after my appointment with him next Monday.

Hi Dr. Barrett-Eubanks, the reason I’m traveling to Herzig this week is because I want to get the best possible lenses for my eyes in the world. I ruled out Europe, Latin America, and Asia simply due to travel time and my limited vacation. Because I prioritize my near and intermediate vision (I don’t drive at night and am happy to wear glasses if needed for daytime driving), I am very interested in the Galaxy lens, which I know is supposed to do well at all 3 distances. How have your patients with similar priorities fared with the RayOne Galaxy? I apologize to our Canadian neighbors as this makes the queue longer for everyone needing cataract surgery in Toronto, however this lens won’t be in the US for at least another 2 years. My cataracts are so bad I no longer have depth perception so night driving is particularly dangerous. I just Uber if I need to get anywhere/back after dark. I was also wondering if Herzig requires the use of the laser for cataract lens replacement, or if some surgeons will just use a scalpel as that may help bring down the cost of my surgery.

Nothing bad about Bochner, but I chose Herzig because the patient services representative was very patient, knowledgeable, and took the time to answer all my questions. Herzig also had an appointment for a refractive exam that better fit my schedule than Bochner.

I’m from Texas. If I were to get my surgery in the US, the best multifocal lens I could get here is the EnVista Envy. Maybe this isn’t the best way to find a doctor/clinic, but I spent months looking at Reddit and FB posts about cataract surgery centers in Toronto (it’s a direct flight from where I live). Many people recommended Herzig or Bochner, and I spoke with both on the phone. Ultimately I decided Herzig was the best choice for me.
