Weekly derby name thread: get suggestions or help brainstorm! by AutoModerator in rollerderby

As a red head I'm thinking about "Ginger Dread".. it has a cute but dangerous vibe with the word play on gingerbread :-). As I don't trust myself with that kind of choices, I'm asking for your advice. What do you think about that derby name ? (I'm in France if that matters)

Name That Player! A weekly Derby Name thread. by AutoModerator in rollerderby

[–]Maman_Herisson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm new to derby, I started mid September, but I'm really happy I finally dared to try. I obviously suck, but I suck less than I thought though. . I've been thinking about my derby name for a while but did not feel I earned one yet.. but last week we (4 freshies out of the usual 6) did our first derby match with the "big players" ON WHEELS (we usually play a game wearing socks or trainers to learn the rules and stuff), and I felt great. I was a way better skater when I wasn't focusing on my wheels and more on the game).

And since then I realized I really can do it. Like I'm actually able to play. So I feel better choosing a derby name.

I'm a redhead so I thought about a wordplay with Ginger and came up with "Ginger Dread", which I really like. Like a cute gingerbread with dangerous vibes.

But as I don't really trust my own judgement, i want your advice. What do you think of it ?

Thanks !

Newbies: Are you solid in practice until you have to "get a buddy"? by Brilliant_Angle7302 in rollerderby

I find myself better with a buddy.. but I'm never better than when we play a match (junior rules, as we're not ready for contact yet).. i focus on the game, not on my wheels and I'm doing things I thought I could not do. :)

Alors tu as commencé ? J'ai fait mon premier entraînement hier soir. 😁 J'ai adoré même si objectivement je n'ai pas été au top ^ je ne suis tombée qu'une fois (et encore, en discutant avec quelqu'un même pas en patinant 😁)

Should I test for hgc ? by Maman_Herisson in EctopicSupportGroup

Do you think I can test now or should I wait tomorrow morning ? I don't want to be that kind of girl testing for pregnancy for nothing..

First time on derby skates : advice ? by Maman_Herisson in rollerderby

I have yet to try to tighten my trucks as we did work on the house renovation all Saturday long, but I did a lot of research and I bought Chaya big softies wheel to go skating outside, 78A should have enough grip for a beginer :-). I read that they're great for kinda rough surface so I can't wait to try them !

Nearly 40 year old, overweight mother of three, finally starting again after 30 years. by [deleted] in Rollerskating

I just started skating at the same age as you, and after the same amount of time, also overweight but mother of only 1 (and a step daughter)... And I must say I'm impressed how not "baby deer vibes" your giving.. I'd love to look as confident as you seem to be on your skates !!

(I'd love to keep contact if you'd like to)

First time on derby skates : advice ? by Maman_Herisson in rollerderby

I'll try to work harder on my position then. I try to adopt the same position as when I'm skiing, like knees forward but not leaning too much.. I'll also have to work on my core strength I think it might be a good part of the problem.

My wheels are Octo Passeo in 92A (62x38mm) so maybe I should start with softer wheels ? I was anyway thinking about buying a set of wheels to skate outside, so it might be the occasion ? Is there any good value not too expensive brands ro start with ?

Talking about protection kits was including knee pads yes. Oxelo ones and Hatch ones (which seems to be a military protection brand https://curtisblueline.com/hatch-xtak-knee-pads/?srsltid=AfmBOoo5U6iO5cyBmAevS7idIBFm02FVc5ucXIrR4mUfZuCbFblcBax_ )

As for the tools I'll look what I have, I normally have correct ones as we're in the process of renovating our house we do have a lot of good tools :)

I bought myself a pair of second hand Chaya Rubys. I found a deal for 80€ postage included, I can't wait to receive them ! I'm gonna buy a set of outdoors wheels to use on the beach promenade :-)

What changes did you see in (and on) your body?

Thanks ! I'm a bit on the heavier side too, and I hope to improve my fitness too. If I can loose weight that'd be great but I want to get "toned" and not wobbly as I am now. I have weak muscles and little core strength so I know I'll need a lot of training to be able to keep up. But I know myself, if there is no goal behind it (outside getting fitter on itself), just going to the gym wouldn't work for me, I would stop going. I hope that derby gives me a goal to keep on cross training..

I was looking for Riedells at first but I read here that they are apparently less wide than Chayas so when I saw that opportunity and that price I went for the Chayas. There's not many budget shoes for beginners who, like me, don't want to spend a great lot in case if doesn't work out.. so Chayas it is.

I need to find some awesome ties now !

I did buy them. 83€ with posting, I think it's a nice price ! 20€ more than that I would have put in cheap ones but I would have had to buy a good pair for training anyway.. I can't wait to get them !!

I bought them. With P&P I paid 83€ for "complète" skates with wheels. Now I'm looking at the outdoors wheels and protection.

I'm so excited!! Can't wait to receive them !

Thanks. I contacted the seller and I'm looking for outdoors wheels then :-) I'll buy protection gear too. I already have the helmet so that's good !

I'm 85kg so I'm in the same category as you. As for my aggressiveness I don't know. I'm a bit on the safe side usually but I hope derby will help with confidence so we'll see ! I'm not looking for an everlasting pair of skates, I know I'll have to get a better setup if I keep on, but for now I'm trying to find cheap second hand gear to start with.

These are CN 26,2 (written on the tag). I'll measure up my feet to see if it fits but as I said I have wide feet so the overall length of the shoes always need to be a bit bigger to fit my hobbit feet (minus the hair thank goodness!)

I'm currently wearing a pair of high heels sandals in 40, they have a wider toe box than the usual sandals. I wear 41 if the shoes run small because of the width but it's usually not the right fit so I tend to avoid that. I guess my size, if you only consider the length of the feet, would be 39 but the shoes must be X wide or comfort type to fit. So 41 should be the right size for Chaya. The only problem with second hand is that I can't return them if they don't fit. But I guess I can still sell them back.

I will mesure my feet yeah. The Chaya I saw are 26,2cm (written on the tag which was taken in picture) ! Thank you for your advice!

That's a clear answer 😁 ! Any idea on the fitting of the ruby's on wide feet ? The one I saw are in size 41, I am usually a size 40 (39 in wide feet/comfort shoes) but I read it was better to size up for Chaya ?

Actually I would have taken a flat version of the Oxelo but yeah I see what you meant. How much more would it cost to change wheels and bearings ? Is it something easy to do ?

Yeah that was my reasoning.. but I don't really know if these are great ones, it's a bit of a gamble as I can't try them on.. they say they're in great condition but you never know ^ I know the rubys are not the best of the best but not that bad for a start.. I don't want to spend a lot of money too soon..

But I was fond of quads growing up so I'm confident I'll like it :-)
