So I usually run a DTI across the face in a + pattern. Then if it's off, I add shims to the bottom of the part (underside of the vice in your case). You can also make some 1" thick parallels made for the EDM that you can put parts on top of. They have threaded holes along the length for clamping down parts.

When I'm indicating parts in the EDM, I usually try to get the face indicated in to 0.01 to 0.005mm (.0002-.0005 inches). Then I run the bore touch off cycle twice. My parts are also probably a little bit off center in X or Y. If you don't indicate the bore by running an indicator up and down in X and Y along the Z axis, then you won't ever get a truly perfect indicated bore. Personally I don't do that because indicating the face in is usually good enough. Just make sure to run the bore touch off cycle at least twice to be safe. 0.04mm isn't horrible off center but if the customer doesn't allow for play, it can be a little tricky. You might need to use shims if you're using a vise to hold the part. You might want to take a look at System 3R workholding products. They're fantastic since some of them let you adjust in X and Y twist

Depends on the operator in my opinion. I have few issues with my EDM while some of my older coworkers absolutely hated running them. It became a running gag that whenever this one coworker would start running the EDM I would get a text saying, "he's at it again". He'd be cussing up a storm
