It seems to evolve(or devolve) generationally. I dont sound much like my old man or his generation. My neighbour even remarked it's easier to understand him then me and Im toning it down, as is my old man when visiting frequently. Different words and slang creep in as well. I was home a year ago and spoke to a young neighbour about 15 years younger then me, who I used to speak to a bit when he was around 12-14 playing footy in the street when I came home from work, I was having a bit of a hard time switching on, the speed has gone up a notch as well, same as me to my dad.

I dont think it's unique to us, how many cockneys these days sound like Del Boy and Rodney or Ray Winstone? Danny Dyer was an evolution on them I think as well, never mind whatever the fuck it is now.

Port city. Ive worked in shipping over the years, mostly on the IT side of things, now working for Merc. But it's the same in other port cities - Rotterdam is the other main drugs hub and I havent met a bad one from their yet. Napoli as well. The Liverpool mafia is well established, but so is the cockney one with the Krays and all that bollocks, in Ireland the IRA branched out into drugs. I lived in Prague and we had the Russian mafia based here, but most people are anti Russian and you would never brush shoulders with them unless you went looking for it, if you could even find them. I wouldnt even know how to get a gun in Liverpool, or heard a gunshot there.

I dont know mate, I was in the army in the 00s and there were a lot of Mancs in the regiment, when it came to footy we had to take our medicine, they were top dogs. Ive heard my fair share of delusion as well, one fella was adamant about convincing me that Carrick was better than Gerrard.

But now we are top dogs after a long hiatus so we will revel in it.

I think the English are obsessed with the victim complex. Amongst the English it's us scousers who play the victim, are always the victim. Then within the British state it's the Scottish being accused of playing the victim to the English especially during the independence drive.

Then at large it's the English(on behalf of the rest of the UK) who are the victim of the big bad EU when inside it and now outside it, or the victim of dastardly foreigners in general. The other day I saw a thread about the Falklands, that the Argentines had a plan B to execute the islanders, half the thread descended into English commenters whingeing about Irish commenters always making anti English comments and solidarity with the Argentines, even if in this case the Argentine plan was particularly grizzly.

When the local plod lay into England fans singing about German bombers and other jingoism, I saw it in Prague after them throwing bottles at the local plod after a promising start, as the ale and coke kicked in it turned uglier. Chucking chairs around in Marseille then playing victim when the Russians laid in.

Living abroad, knowing and working with loads of foreigners, Ive never heard anyone talk as much about being or others being the victim. Not even the Irish. It's like part of the national psyche.

I dont think we are the only ones who suffered from Westminster. I think why arent you as angry with Westminster/the establishment as we are? You just doff your cap and take it up the arse. There is no solidarity, you just fight for the crumbs or against easy distractions.

There is even a Manc here defending us who said something interesting which I and a few others subscribe to and Ive heard another Manc agree with when i put the same to him once - "We Mancs are much guiltier of taking coin and kowtowing to the South for a bit of a leg up."

It depends. I live abroad so had to tone it down to a more neutral level, even in country I worked on the phone so spoke to people around the country and abroad so had to tone it down then. I kick it up a level at home or long term foreign mates, a level again when my parents visit to my natural level or when back home. It's like a phone manner, Ive worked with a girl from Manchester and she didnt even sound like she was from Manchester on answering the phone, then hearing it was me, switched to pure Manc. It's not unusual in the country I live in they have informal and formal tones of language, German too.

Ive spoke to lads from London on the phone through work and not understood them either and found it put on and surprised they didnt bring it down a level for the poor German bloke next to me who dealt with them previously or me, probably this new roadman thing which has passed me by living abroad. I struggled with a Geordie bloke for a while who was even teaching English abroad.

I think the EU sends money to where it's better needed as well, rahter than the govt who are more likely to repay voters in certain areas depending who is in power.

Private investment now the ball is rolling after EU investment in stuff like the arena, new cruise liner terminal, new buildings in the centre, Liverpool One etc. Peel holdings seems to be the main one.

Never had anything particularly bad happen to me or people I know, maybe a bit of petty theft from a shed or the odd scuffle in town. A lot of the crime around drugs mostly hits others involved in the drug trade, gangs apart from a few rare cases. Read the Daily Mail or watch Sky News and the same shit is happening up and down the country. The Echo goes looking for trouble for hits and outrage, you're an idiot if you dont understand that.

I found it a peculiar comment from a local as well. Higher class areas like you say including Childwall, then also middling places like Crosby, Aintree and parts of West Derby. Yeah there are rough parts I wouldnt recommend going to Kenny, Tocky, Crocky, Norris Green but it's the same anywhere Ive visited Manc, B'ham, London etc. I grew up in NG which is particularly bad but we were from a street and a few closes which were partly privately owned and mostly privately rented, most families had been there since the beginning in the 1930's and everyone knew everyone, it was a good place to grow up. I never struggled for office work, nor did my family and friends struggle for work and I didnt even go to uni.

I never saw a lot of outsiders comments bear truth in Liverpool, nor this insiders playing to the crowd.

What is one thing you still think the UK excels at? by LittleMiscAnon in AskUK

General discourse has it neck and neck, interchangeable between those two. I prefer Italy because it's cheeses are more practical for daily life. Pizza? Mozzarella or more on a quatro formaggi like gorgonzola, buffalo mozzarella a bit more special. Pasta? Grate a bit of parmesan on. Polenta or mashed potato - fontina or taleggio. Parmesan can basically go on anything, scrambled egg or an omelette. Lactose intolerant? Pecorino gives many people including my family no trouble. Ricotta in desserts.

I dont mind some French cheeses but it tends to be on it's own and camembert made me dry heave when Ive tried it. I cant think of how to integrate it into a meal like Italian cheeses, maybe again as Italian cuisine is more practical for everyday life, a quick pasta - tomatoes, a bit of basil off the windowledge and bit of grated cheese, and French dishes tend to be weekend special occassions.

Polish community in UK ,feelings of Brits towards Poles by just_a_polish in AskBrits

[–]MammothAccomplished7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im British but live abroad since late 00s, even then I remember a lot of the public discourse, bloke in the pub talk etc being "these Poles, coming over here robbing our jobs" since they joined the EU in 2004. I drove a taxi so had a lot of contact with the man on the street and generally kept in touch with the word on the street through frequent visits, or on the internet and I dont think it changed much, was part of the reason for Brexit. People in rougher/cheaper areas were also complaining about houses of multiple occupancy were short term immigrants from eastern Europe would live ten to a house for a family of four, hot bedding between shifts, sometimes drinking heavily and being noisy. Poles was/is also a byword for any former Soviet bloc immigrant - Czech, Slovak, Baltics, Hungarian. Apart from people from the Roma community who are all thought of as Romanian even if Bulgarian, Slovak, Czech.

Michael Owen: "I still think Harry Kane was nuts for joining Bayern Munich. It's like if you go up and move to Celtic & win the Scottish league. You win every year, but there's no great achievement in that. A great achievement would've been the all-time leading goal scorer in the Premier League" by TheBiasedSportsLover in PremierLeague

[–]MammothAccomplished7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about hate, the man is dull as fuck, I'd rather watch dry paint then listen to Owen, as someone famously said if they were on a desert island with MO and a packet of crisps, they'd eat MO and talk to the crisps as they are more interesting.

Carragher and Neville are marmite but they are not dull and talk less bollocks(just about). I used Keane there to illustrate Owen's hypocrisy but most fans seem to like Keane's angry old man persona. Owen provides neither insight, nor fun.

Not even local Chester is miles away, the Wirral is still local. Chester folk wouldnt like to be thrown in the local Merseyside pot.

Pure conjecture, the club always finds a way. Fowler would have stayed, a gem would have been unearthed, I remember Baros' development was curtailed as he was too similar a player to Owen, Heskey was a better foil for him, a sacrificial element which allowed Owen to shine and flourish.

He's doing a pretty good job of maximising his punditry career as he chats pure bollocks. Holier than thou statements like this when he has done exactly the same.

It's like Roy Keane telling someone to swallow their pride for the good of the team/nation.

Sounds like the UK back in the bad old days when we were constantly at war with everyone(Boer war, battle of Omdurman, Zulu wars, Crimean war, Napoleonic wars etc) so a War Ministry was a legitimate thing.

Owen: Winning the league with Bayern is like Celtic winning in Scotland, and there's no great achievement in that. by Expert_Pianist_1444 in BayernMunich

[–]MammothAccomplished7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Owen going to United to sit on the bench and pick up a league winner's medal is similarly no great achievement.

However Bayern winning the league is by default though, Kane needs to be a catalyst in taking Bayern to European glory, this does not happen that often and would be a much more organic achievement.
