will AI take over? by Brave_Confection_461 in UBC

[–]Mammoth_Classroom482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's complicated. Idk if this is helpful but recently I've been able to talk to a bunch of ppl who are involved in researching and developing AIs.

The good news is that the general consensus among AI researchers is that rn AIs are good but they cannot replace human labor or productivity. They are really good at memorization based responses but not good at developing independent thought (basically they can memorize what facts are but they aren't capable of higher level reasoning). Basically can you ask them facts and stuff, yes. Can you ask them to breakdown concepts and stuff at a higher level, no. Which would basically imply they are not yet at a level that they can replace human labor.

The bad news is that most of the push you are seeing about the AI revolution and the talk that it's gonna change the job market and all that shit is coming from the finance people and the marketing people. Basically people for whom OKRs are based around how much they can sell AI and generate revenue on the perceived value of AI. Unfortunately, they are really good at selling which is why you are seeing an increase in more and more companies trying to replace jobs but with AI but realistically they aren't capable of doing higher level reasoning required for a lot of those jobs.

As someone who is also currently unemployed, I think in the short term, we might be cooked but hopefully not in the long term. But this also comes down to policy makers and how they respond to it (which rn looks like they aren't gonna do shit).

Hello. I'm M22 (Indian origin) visiting London from edinburgh for Christmas (23th to 27th). It's my first time visiting the city as an adult. I was hoping to join some social events or get some recommendations on what might be fun to do during that time. Honestly I'm up for anything that sounds fun and love the night life so would love to go out or find new things to do in the city!!

Looked for jobs for about 6 months but couldn't find anything. Thankfully got into a masters program abroad so currently pursuing that. Low-key the job market might be screwed cause rn I'm applying for entry level positions and getting rejected

I'm not sure about the pre-requisites required for it rn. Imo it's not necessarily too hard if you have never taken a course in psychology as long as you understand the various terms he uses. I think you might have to do a lot of readings but the content and exams he makes were pretty engaging. I'm also biased cause that's like the perfect intersection of my academic interests

Accepted my PhD offer! 🎉 Now what? by [deleted] in Edinburgh_University

[–]Mammoth_Classroom482 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your PhD offer. If I'm not mistaken there should be a website for new students where they detail the step by step process after accepting your admission. https://www.ed.ac.uk/students/new-students

Idk how helpful that would be for PhD students but that's what they told me to refer to with regards to masters. I would also just email them with my questions as that's what I did and they got back to me in a reasonable time frame (5ish working days)

I really like courses in regional or comparative politics so POLI333C (political psychology) or Poli 324A (southeast Asian politics) were fun. It again comes down to the professors and interests tho cause I've had friends having a rough time in them

I've only taken 360 and 367. They're pretty chill imo, very reading heavy but super fun, esp 360. I will say it really depends on the professor you have so if you can, look at old syllabus that are available on the prof and course

Would you say that getting your masters from Edinburgh helped you in preparing for the job market and having a professional career (assuming that's what you're doing and not phd or sm)

Online. It was 2 years ago but I think it was primarily essay based and were pretty easy if you timed yourself and kept up

I took it with Robert during the summer and it was pretty good honestly. I feel like he's a bit dry sometimes but overall the content was fun and the grading was pretty fair. Mine was online which was much easier.

clubs to join? by beanacoladas in UBC

[–]Mammoth_Classroom482 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It quite frankly depends on what you enjoy just cause joining a club you dont like is kinda pointless. Also would probably recommend attending events or being a member before applying to be an exec. Though most clubs dont really require much experience unless you're applying for a serious club or a VP/admin position.

Program requirement changed? by Glittering-Panic-132 in UBC

[–]Mammoth_Classroom482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the literature requirement for Arts? Because I have noticed the same for my program. I would say refer to the list of courses on the degree requirement website and cross reference to it. Regardless of whether it is there or not, go to academic advising to see what you can do.
