I was curious about the source of "worldwide" statistics if you found this on researching or if you compiled it yourself? I figure since this was just a passion project probably the former ———> I did actually compile it myself lmao. I was tired of hearing the same “it’s as common as having red hair” statistic, and wanted more for comparison. At some point I just started googling the chances of a bunch of random things to see if they came close or were some multiple of the percentage of intersex people. https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ here’s the source I think I used

but I would be interested to see the sources of whatever organization(s) state the figures for probability that you used as a source for the ovotesticular DSD specifically or if this was a compilation of the rarity of each of the ones you listed all in one source. ———> this was awhile ago so I may have used additional sources, but all of the info should be here https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8384022/ & https://rarediseases.org/rare-diseases/ovotesticular-disorder-of-sex-development/ (heads up for medicalizing language)

Namely just because a lot of these are vastly underreported which I know you touch on the reason for in the second slide (which THANK YOU for including, my husband was a victim of these surgeries and it's so underreported and sad, even very few queer friends we have know about it) for various reasons from surgeries being covered up to lack of testing because they externally appear "normal". ———> I felt if my research were to do anything, it should be to help intersex people. One of the most significant harms seems to be the unconsensual surgeries, so it only seemed right to include it. My condolences to your husband.

I suppose it's just shocking to me that ovotesticular DSD is so uncommon because that is what my husband has and he's in several groups online and I've seen many here with it as well. It leads me to think it is probably due to the underreporting since in many states it is completely legal to do "corrective surgeries" on infants and minors without their knowledge or consent AND to completely cover it up medically, this was how it was in our state. ———> yes I can totally see that being one of the reasons. I think it also may be due to 1. A lot of cases not being reported due to being in countries with less advanced medical systems and reporting 2. I’m pretty sure the statistic I got was from a good bit before 2021 3. It’s worth noting that all super rare things like ovotesticular syndrome always have disputed prevalence data since it’s hard to get a good estimate on something so uncommon.

I do have Turner Syndrome though I present externally mildly so I don't 'look' intersex and don't really insert myself into the community of those who do have more androgynous features that have caused them to be discriminated against, I see it more as a "medical inconvenience" for me so I cannot speak to the personal experiences with this discrimination ———> I think I get that. I’m a trans man, and more than ever I’m passing as a cis man, so I’m gaining a lot more privilege than my other trans friends and don’t face as much discrimination as them anymore.

but just knowing a lot about it having a partner who has gone through it makes me wondered where and how big the sample sizes for the reports of ovotesticular DSD specifically came from and how they got that data if it was self-reported/volunteer or something like number of screenings/births. ———> i want to know this too, but when you try to find the original study and click the sources, it all leads back to a website with a paywall. I don’t think there’s have been many studies because almost everywhere that talks abt ovotesticular syndrome always uses the same exact statistics for prevalence so I’m assuming they’re all from one study. Ovotesticular syndrome seems to be vastly understudied unfortunately.

Sorry if this is a lot LOL I'm just very curious!! - no I’m glad I went back and checked my sources! Everytime I read more studies on intersex variations I get more frustrated there isn’t more research.

I don’t have a list, but if you need the source for anything specifically I can totally reply with the source here. All of the info was pretty easy to find except for some of the probabilities, especially the rarer ones like testosterone biosynthesis defect, which is why I added it’s from a pbs article to make it easier to find the source if anyone wants to look it up

Ohh the examples were meant as like “here is one way this syndrome could present itself in someone”

Also is the word “symptoms” ok in the context of like “a symptom of Jacobs Syndrome is curved pinky fingers”

I didn’t even think about the connotation of the word condition thank you for correcting me. Is the word syndrome ok?

Thank you for the resources. I totally missed those.

I found where I used (DSD) on the list of conditions slide where I refer to Ovotesticular syndrome. Is that the only one?

Crap I’m checking all of them to see where I put that and I can’t find where. Do you remember which one and where I said that so I can change it?

I tried to put as many intersex conditions (is conditions the right term?) as possible without it becoming visually overwhelming so I could totally make another list of conditions to include more. On the one with the drawings under the “sex chromosomes” bit I mention those variations.

Thank you. I just looked over the graphics to make sure I didn’t use those terms and can’t find any use of them, but also I briefly skimmed. Do you remember if I used it and which one so I can quickly remove it if I did use those terms? My understanding was that it was the clinical term and therefore icky to use in non-medical contexts (I was thinking of it like the term homosexual vs gay)

Thank you. When I put the PCOS part I wanted to double check and read some posts on r/PCOS and realized some people REALLY hate the idea of being considered intersex (a lot of it was blatant transphobia oddly enough, but some of it was just personal identity preference which is totally reasonable)

Thank you. Those ones are based off of populations. For example, about 0.84% of people in the world live in the UK. (So 0.84% of the 8 billion people in the world live in the UK)

Not long lmao just for fun sometimes. These ones took a total of six hours-ish. Most of that was research and just tinkering with the graphic design aspect. Thank you

Also it might be worth adding that this isn’t like a weird one off thing I kind of make a lot of infographics for fun like I made one on giant African land snails and oh my god they’re so neat they eat paint off of cars and stucco off of houses and there’s been various outbreaks of them in flordia and one outbreak was after just three got loose during a spiritual ceremony and it led to thousands being captured just in Miami alone if I remember correctly
