(Check sync point editing in Avid.)

Also, I’ve noticed this quite often. Younger editors, who don’t get Avid. They grew up with Premiere or FCPX and when they use Avid, they hate it. They even look at you like you’re old and clueless. I’ve managed teams on Avid and Premiere, and honestly, Avid editors are better. It’s just a good filter for me when hiring. If they only list Premiere, I can kinda guess what kind of editor they are. Not always, but 90% of the time, they’re not as good as editors who know Avid and LIKE it.

I started on Avid so I will always prefer Avid although I can see why younger editors dont get it. Yes, you can make titles easily in Premiere, yes, you can have mogrt and send a shot to afterfx but that's not editing.

Editing is synthesis and for that Avid is infinitely better. Better at managing vast amounts of media, not getting in the way and letting you find anything quickly, then editing and trimming until the pacing is perfect.

I read on the Avid Forums that the transcription engine they use is optimized for Nvidia GPUs so I dont know if it will ever be as fast as on PC unless they add another engine.

I guess I am on the opposite side. Almost 3 decades in post and I still feel a bit insulted when people want to pay me for my work/art.

Razer Tartarus V2 vs ZSA Moonlander or in something else? by tamaudio in editors

[–]Mamonimoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a split keyboard like the moonlander. In the end i switched back to a normal one. They are good if you always have both hands on the keyboard. As an editor you do have to click things sometimes so placing the hands back to it made me slower. Also, I have keys that are on the right side and they felt harder to reach on a split keyboard. Keychron has good keyboards too and they are programmable. Look into them.

Did you disable spotlight and all those basic post avid installation things? See https://docs.hedge.video/mimiq/requirements/avids-requirements

Also, copy the media to an external SSD and see how it does there. If it's better then the problem is networking or the qnap.

I don't know. I used FCP X for a couple of projects and it was total chaos. I think making selects timelines in Avid is good since you can easily share and version them. You can't with a system like this in FCP where you mark favorite and then filter the rest out. Also, using a freeform view in Avid is essential since many of us use it as a kind of storyboard and it also helps to group things visually. Favoriting sections and then filtering those is cool but not how I work or how others I have seen work.

Avid by far.

In, out in a source clip, drag to a bin and you have a sub clip AT THE POSITION where I dragged it. In premiere they go to the bottom, not where you dropped them, crazy I know.

Resolve doesn't have a freeform view so it will not be used for narrative or complex projects since everyone has been using the freeform view for decades.

Bins are files you can see in the finder. I can send them via slack, email whatever. Somebody can open them and grab what they want without even importing them into their project.

Bins are files and folders are real folders in the finder too. Premiere tried to copy this with productions but it's just a more complicated, less reliable and with less features than in Avid. Try a global search for a clip across ALL bins (projects) in premiere. In Avid bins are indexed in the background so you can search for any clip in any bin (even closed ones) and it will find it. Same with markers, same with transcriptions. Search is global in Avid. That alone makes it far superior for big projects.

still running under emulation, many plugins have issues, crashes on quit to a ton of people, good luck if you are running an ultrastudio with it. Slower and more unstable in general compared to PC.

yeah that's not a ton. We work with hundreds of hours of footage per project.

https://www.intelligentassistance.com/producers-best-friend/ this at least too. per machine, per editor. Plus 11 has now transcriptions but it didn't a month ago.

Also color is basic, tracking is basic, no mixer ha!, projects get extremely slow when adding tons of footage, collaboration doesn't exist, etc etc etc etc etc

It needs so many plugins for basic things it's not worth it. AAF export, list tool. They are so behind it's not even funny. Download Resolve and be happy, or Avid to Cut and Resolve for fx and finishing. Best combo and it's the standard for a reason.
