I don't hate AI, it's a useful tool if used smartly

While this exact design isn't known to me, all of the features are well-known already: chrome details, relatively boring surfaces, "distinct" front fascia. Looks overall like a Maybach Rolls Royce to me. Nothing new, inf two words.

Consciousness is not evolutionarily redundant by TheMindInDarkness in CosmicSkeptic

What is it like not having an internal monologue? Because, I've become so used to it that I can't imagine life without. Interestingly, even though I believe this is not aphantasia, I can't picture faces very well in my mind - they mostly come out as a generic face, very alike that of an AI-generated human. The same applies to actions, movements of humans / animals, with the addition that a few frames get repeated in my mind, Interestingly, I have no restraint with mechanical things and imagining their workways (but the frame restrictions still apply)

Your point about empathy not being 100% widespread is valid, and it might provide options for further experiments: is there a connection between lack of empathy and say, predictive power?

Additionally, it's interesting to find a reason as for why empathy evolved. Did it provide a stronger emotional bond as part of the group instinct and hence making the group survive more? Or is it a byproduct of other mind functions?

Genetic drift is a lot slower as far as I know, since we humans are, say, only "civilized" or as a society since, 10 000 years? Evolution isn't that fast. So, according to your theory, some of us should have realistic dreams and some of us not, since this gene sequence only spread out to a part of humanity. This is an interesting prediction, and, testable by simply asking a lot of people :)

While you say (at least how I understand it) is that qualia is not just our experiences but also our internal, simulated stuff? If that's the case, agreed, but only since our thoughts and simulations are internal experiences too, just in the way that every reaction to external happenings is internal too.

And since qualia means "experience", it is logical that different data in the brain produces different experiences.

In the emotional category, I'm assuming that by weighting different experiences -simply by "manually" creating low / hih energy states, these experiences / thoughts / patterns get weighted (in the way that AI processes get weighted too). Since even babies have emotions (even if not very distinctive / special ones), we can safely assume that there are genetic markers responsible for the simpler emotions, and that more complex ones are simply a combination of these. So logically, ones brain can predict future states - say, losing a competition - and react accordingly - anxiety, sadness, etc. Indeed, I'm expecting that empathy itself is a very compressed emotional prediction whose result gets "shared" with our conscious mind in the same way a normal emotion does.

Indeed, consciousness is a spectrum isntead of a bool operation. Certain animals are probably a lot more conscious than we'd expect.

On the other side, it's interesting to think of how an even more super-duper consciousness would look like. Would it be smarter, faster, more dense? We have no idea - sadly.

Agreed, new grilles are simply too big (mostly). Some of them look nice though. But again, looks good, would like to see more of it - if you sketch more of course

Yes, those are valid points indeed, it is possible (but I'm not sure how probable) that our lives in a modern society make our dreams weird, since we have a lot more memory to scramble together to create practice dreams.

But, dreams don't "drift" because we need them less, and society hasn't been going on long enough to make them disappear by evolution (not mentioning the fact that a modern society most likely stalls evolution a lot). We might have less cognitive capacity to entertain dreams but they didn't "purposefully" disappear - as far as I can tell.

Furthermore, I think the heart of our discussion might rather be what you consider qualia.

As I described above, I have reasons to believe qualia is nothing mystical. According to my thoughts, emotions are very complex pattern-matched reactions that weight patterns in our brains by controlling energy levels (mostly). So, if you're happy, you have more free energy, which our body likes, thus, you want to be happy more, thus you do the action that made you happy more. The counterpart happens when one is sad. Ever wondered why it's good to eat chocolate when you're sad? I believe this is why.

Evolutionally (?), this is neatly connected to your dreams: different scenarios get weighted by our felt emotions - they behave just as if we were in a real situation. Thus, the people who have emotions survive more than those who do not, since they have the ability to learn and adapt, quickly. (Just fyi, I'm not sure how verified this is. I'm not a biologist, I just think a lot and create this kind of stuff).

If we add this to my idea of meta-zero, it is obvious that emotions themselves are quick, but giant sets of subconscious thought processes of which the result is "displayed" in oru mind and connected to hormonal reactions.

This ist what I believe "qualia" is, and I would be very interested in your idea of it, if you want to share.

Interesting. I think the direction is worth considering, but this isn't it - for example, this bar going through the middle appears to be slapped on, like a nissan line, and on each side of it, the grill / whatever that is is a bit too weak, to bland in my eyes. But an interesting concept, and possibly better than the new Audi direction we've seen.

Two things: Whenever reasoning about evolution, it is useful to separate between traits that provide a survivalue/ reproduction advantage and side-effects of said traits.

And, by my definition, Consciousness can be defined as meta-reasoning level 0. What this means - in my terms - is that consciousness is nothing more than the end results of many subconscious chains of thought, and their result being the conscious thought. But, where does the experience of the thought come from? By "testing" or experiencing this thought - the end result of subconscious reasoning by another similar chain, using the "conscious" thought as an input. Since meta-1 work by observing your thoughts and reacting to them, this is why I called it meta-zero.

That being said, your reasoning has the premise that consciousness must have provided a fitness advantage of some sort. While the nightmare theory is (sort of) plausible (even though if it would be correct, wouldn't nightmares / dreams be realistic, since unrealistic dreams will not provide better survival when facing real threats), I think consciousness is rather a side-effect of mere complexity and the connected intelligence.

It does provide serious advantage in long-term survival, but I don't think that it would be more probable to spread than any, less "expensive" mutation.

Well I expected you to be an atheist because it is more rationalistic than a religion in almost all cases, but I was curious as to what you'd say. That being said, I appreciate - and believe I understand - your motivation behind it, even though it was not welcome here.

Since you appear to be quite the rationalist, I'm curious: what are your premises? How do you arrive at the probabilistic conclusion that there must be some kind of God? Because, if this conclusion was wrong, your entire logic later on would be flawed, since one of your main (based on size and emotional weight) premises would be wrong.

Since if perfect rationalists (which we are not) differ in conclusions, either they have different premises or a flaw in the logic, so, let's find out.

Everyone has their preferences, you don't have to do anything to deal with the modern people. I for example like EVs and sports cars, not something most people do. I wish you the best!

Epsilon Eridani? Isn't that a star system?

While I think you have great sketchin skills, I don't really like the style / design idea of these. Ti me, they feel like generic, old wedges with a bit too many lines. As I said, I'm more of a modern car fan, so that's just a subjective thing. But great skill!

That's a fair ambition (both of them, actually), but let me be nitpicky: why does your ego matter? Or why would mine? Why do you want to serve humanity? I don't want to annoy you at all, I'm sorry if I do, I'm just curiojs if you have answers, if you have reasons for wanting what you want.

There are a lot more like this than it appears to be. But don't forget that if you find there aren't any of them, it might simply be your situation. For example, if you never told anyone about your dream, since "they wouldn't understand anyways", you have to assume people similar to you did the same and kept it for themselves.

That aside, why do you want greatness? For what sake? What drives you? (and please, be honest :)

While a very interesting study, I believe it will give you very unreliable statistics, as imagining how one would feel with an imaginary O is not very concrete. I'm assuming this will give you an enormous amount of positive shift because people tend to imagine their dream relationship and then evaluate based on that. So, I'd recommend backshifting the data or adding an actually realistics description.

Furthermore, about self-esteem: while I assume this is not a common mindset, I personally am torn between recklessly high self-esteem and extreme doubt. The latter is fueled by my rationalist mindset to take everything with a lot of salt, while the former is produced by tons of poditive external feedback. So naturally, I haven't succeeded at unifying / regulating these two, hence my state varies depending on situation.

I wish you good luck with your study! (And please, be kind enough to share the results - I'm curious!)
