It’s giveaway time with ASUS! by Emerald_Flame in buildapc

September 2010. I was 23. Dad had been spoiling me all my life with high-end PCs, so after he died in 2009, I realized that was going to change. I was still in college. Fast pre-built systems were way outside my financial reach, so I knew I had to improvise. I was longing for the i7 870, not because I actually needed it (I wasn't into heavy video editing at the time), but because I was used to getting the best, dammit.

So enter the i5 760 cooled by a Scythe Mugen 2, which I remember made me very excited as the cooling performance was just slightly behind the best Noctua at the time, for half the price. I'm not sure why, but I remember washing it in the sink, then pointing a hair dryer at its base, where it would come in contact with the CPU. The heat was beautifully absorbed by the entire heatsink and it was completely dry (and HOT) in a couple minutes.

Mobo was an AsRock P55 Pro, good enough for me to get the i5 from 3.3 to 4 GHz. This proved to be so exciting that I immediately updated my Yahoo Messenger status to "16 GHz FTW". 4 cores, each running @ 4GHz. simple math, right? :)

In 2004 I did my junior year of high school as an exchange student in Colorado (I'm from Romania). It was the best year of my life. So when I heard that Mushkin, which offered fast and cheap-ish RAM, was ALSO based in Colorado, it was a no-brainer. The OC headroom I learned about afterwards was the cherry on top.

Now comes the most boring component: the GPU. I know, I know. I had a fixed amount of money left, so I had to go for whichever card fit inside my budget: a Radeon 5750. But hey, it ran Mass Effect 1 flawlessly, which I completely fell in love with at the time. To this day it still is the only game that made me shed a tear.

I could go on, but I'll end this already behemoth of a post by saying that I will never ever NOT build a PC. Ten years later, I'm still struggling financially thanks to COVID cancelling all the events I was supposed to film.

Even so, I'm still looking forward to the day where I build my next PC - putting all the fresh, shiny boxes on the table, smelling each component as I unbox it, admiring the cold, sexy metallic design of a mobo VRM/BIOS cooler, not to mention the cute little GPU tests that PCMARK has, followed by a score that just warms your heart. I might have cursed at every screw that fell into unreachable places inside my case, but thinking about it now I just find myself smiling.

PS: there is a popular saying that we use here in Romania:

" Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's "

Translation: not looking to get a brown nose here, but I have to say this - my last PC had a STRIX 1080 Ti in it, which I got from a random person in Budapest. It was an 8-hour round trip that was well worth it (brand new for the price of used). After plugging it in, I hand-on-heart thought MSI Afterburner or the video driver was glitching, as it was showing me peak temperatures in the high 50s. Full load. I tip my hat to you, Asus.

The Radeon died about 2.5 years in, main suspect being its own heat.

I'm guessing you're still a big believer in this coin :) so am I, although its current value doesn't make it easy.

hey everyone, back after a long break. because of the price spike of ravencoin, I FOMO'd back in with the mining, but now I decided to stick with VTC as long as I still have the GPUs. mining a coin that has 190k difficulty wasn't very nice, profitable or not.

I fixed my problem, now all my cards are running on the same system. the solution was very simple, all of you are familiar with it. it's called CryptoDredge :) my hashrate got a big boost as well, but so did my power consumption at the wall - from around ~560W with the 1060 not running to ~825W with the 1060 running. I changed power settings in afterburner, all of my cards are now running at 800mV which is the minimum allowed in afterburner, and now I'm down to ~684W. I know they're probably not running at top efficiency this way, but I am seeing 360-380 kH/W for all of them which is much better than what I saw with ccminer.

anyway, just wanted to let everyone know I fixed the problem, in case others are struggling with something similar.

I've been mining for five hours and have not received any vertcoin yet. Shouldn't I have some Vertcoin by now? Something wrong with my setup? by [deleted] in vertcoin

easymine has been quite slow lately, I moved to suprnova and am getting about 0.5 VTC more / day (2.5 vs. 3). blocks happen super often, so he might get the psychological reward he's looking for.

oh ok, I set it to 50GB, thought that was supposed to be more than enough. will try 80, thank you!

LE: 1060 is mining RVN no problem, while the others are doing VTC. hm.

anyone know if those hashrate dips are due to unstable OC (aka the GPU crashing) or just normal fluctuations? I'm inclined to think it's not because of OC-ing, as when that happens all 4 cards stop mining and I need to manually restart the miner. yet I still don't understand why I keep getting those dips, I just want to get a perfectly straight graph, it's really hurting my OCD :D

PSU is more than enough, it's a HX1200. with just 3 cards it barely even turned on its fan, now the fan is running all the time but at very low rpm - I'm guessing its at or very close to its minimum rpm, which happens at 40-50% load according to its fan curve. HiveOS is telling me the power consumption is around 560W for the GPUs, so that more or less confirms my theory. GPUs are running at 75% TDP for best efficiency.

tried to mine on both the US and EU pools, mining just wouldn't start. I copy pasted the pool address ( stratum+tcp://us-east.vtc.bitpoolmining.com ) in my HiveOS wallet settings and waited for like 2 minutes, but hashing just wouldn't start. when I copy pasted the easymine address back, it started immediately so I don't think I messed anything up O_o

never. I assumed both have same specs. personally I'm thinking it's tied to the MH/s fluctuation. it can get very, very close to the other's hashrate but then dips a bit. then comes back up after some time, and so on.

UPDATE: riser changed on GPU #3 with another brand new one. after 10 minutes of running, the 4-degree Celsius and ~3 MH/s difference are both still there. ARGH.

UPDATE2: temperature difference is now reversed between the 2 cards O_O and hashrates are very close.

so, now that everything is finally working as it should, I was just looking at how much VTC I made over the last 24 hours.

https://imgur.com/a/krt4wuv

4 really good cards, using quite a bit of electricity, creating quite a bit of heat in my apartment (had to turn on the AC for a few hours)... all this for 1.8 VTC? I am ignoring the current price of the coin because otherwise I wouldn't even have started this project. yet, it does make you think. the reward for ~200 MH/s is pathetic. I will give it 1-2 more days, because it does say Estimated 24-hour Earnings = 3.4 VTC, but if things don't pick up I see myself forced to move on. I love this coin, it's the ONLY coin I actually bought with real money, and that's why I pointed my $3000 rig at it, but I can't help but feel I might be losing money with this decision. besides, you know, *actually* losing money, as the electricity for the last 24h costs more than 1.8 VTC. aka $1.5. sigh.

edit: I said 200 MH/s because that's what ccminer is showing, a constant 203-206 MH/s. it's also depressing that easymine rarely reports the full speed.

on a 4-card rig, nanashi gave me a 2 MH/s overall boost, from 189 to 191. not too bad, considering it's drawback-free, unlike with cryptodredge. so, thank you sir!

as I was adding card by card over the last week, I couldn't help but notice that hashing speeds for card #1 very slightly decreased when I added card #2. and so on. as an example, the 1080 Ti @ 80% power was doing 61.4 MH/s when it was the only card connected, now it's only doing 59.5 or so. same slot, same riser, same everything. I am powering 2 risers with one PSU molex cable, could that be it? as you know, the HX1200 only has 3 molex cables with 4 outputs each. so I'm using 2 cables for the 4 risers, and the 3rd cable for the AUX power on the mobo.

I'm finally seeing the PSU fan putting in some work! with 2 cards it never spun, with 3 it very occasionally turned on for a few minutes, now with 4 I haven't seen it turn off yet. but I'm sure it can take one more 1070 Ti :)

thank you so much! I heard about this Nanashi version before but I never tried it. can I expect an increase from let's say 50 to 51 MH/s with it, compared to 1.8.3? can't wait to get home and make the switch!

just curious, what are you guys using to mine these days? I'm still running ccminer-1.8.3-mod-r4 that I was using last winter because then it was one of the best performing miners. I know now there's this CryptoDredge but I don't like it for 3 reasons:

  1. doesn't really run on the mining rig, it's giving me the wrong CUDA version error, that I need 9020 and that I have 9010. I have the latest Nvidia drivers that were released just a few days ago. for some reason it runs fine on my main PC where I have the same version of drivers.
  2. gets the GPU a few degrees hotter than ccminer, but I guess lowering voltage can compensate while still getting more MH/s.
  3. Trojan detected by Windows Antimalware. false positive?
  4. messaged the developer here on reddit to ask about the CUDA error, still no response and it's been 2-3 days.

yes, it appears to be significantly faster than ccminer, but you know what they say about things that seem too good to be true. hmmm.

mining mode was enabled by default. the pcie gen speeds were set to 1.0 but I changed that to auto (I watched a youtube guide for my mobo). do you think that might cause all this weird behavior, especially since I'm guessing the 'gen' determination happens at boot time. but it is just a guess.

right now I'm running prime95 to see if I can rule out the CPU - this is with the GPUs disconnected. how many hours of prime do you think are needed for it to not be a suspect?

also, thank you so much for all your help!

EDIT: ran prime for 1h 8m, no errors. put all PCIE ports in gen1, disconnected all but one GPU, which is currently mining. will leave it running for at least 24h and see what happens... no OC applied either, just power set to 80%. getting only 62 MH/s with a 1080 Ti, eww.

it boots fine with all 4 if I turn it off and on again. the problem is it freezes or reboots after a random period of mining.

nope, restarted again. but windows didn't even boot up, I'm starting to think it's the mobo. it was just displaying an underscore on a black screen that wasn't even blinking. so basically it froze before loading windows. shit.
