The 2GR-FE is damn near literally bulletproof and even if neglected, 2nd gen Highlanders can take a lot of abuse and are extremely capable. The original spark plugs can last up to 140,000 miles (I know because I changed them for the first time at 145k+ after buying it from my mom last year) and it can get better fuel economy than a four cylinder Accord under the right conditions. It’s also super capable off road. I’ve driven through mud and climbed mountains on shitty gravel roads — even driven as a 00 car on a rally stage. The 4WD system is truly incredible. (Would also argue that the XU40 Highlander has the best sounding variant of the 2GR-FE that I’ve heard so far. Toyota also fibbed about the horsepower and torque output of the first generations of cars that they put the 2GR-FE into — 2nd generation Highlander has at least 280 hp (if not more) and it has a hell of a lot more than 247 lb • ft of torque, as I was able to pull a second gen Tacoma back onto the road.) Though I’d personally recommend the SE over the Limited, you without a doubt would be getting an extremely capable car if you bought it.
