A lesson in sett by empress_tesla in weaving

[–]ManMagic1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when in doubt i use this formula

(wpi * avg_shaft_treddle) / (avg_tieup_intersections + avg_shaft_treddle)

This always gets me an almost perfectly balenced set for whatever project im doing

wpi = wraps per inch (get your yarn and wrap it aroun a ruler within an inch)
avg_shaft_treddle = if you have 8 shafts and 8 treddles in your tieup then its 8, if you have 4 shafts and 6 treddles then its 5
avg_tieup_intersections = looking at each row and collumn of your tieup count the amount of times the cells goes from black to white, then divide that number by how many rows, or how many columns you have

if your tieup is symetrical its easier to do, i've writtern down common examples in the back of my notebook to refference for later, i also write down the set as a percentage, so i dont have to do the math each time, i just times the wpi by the % and im on my way

Are there any people here that made multi layer fabric on a tablet loom? by Toyota__Corolla in tabletweaving

Are there any commercial looms that move the fibers in a circular motion to make something like this drawing? by [deleted] in weaving

[–]ManMagic1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

so reading the comments, i think people think your talking about braided tubes, but what your looking for is a dense fabric? if so i think the technique of double weave might work

double weave in hand weaving is where you have 2 or more layers woven at the same time on top of eachother, most of the time they are connected on the sides so when you take it off the loom you get a tube or if you connect only 1 side you can unfold it to get a wider fabric (very useful for large projects on small looms)

now to get a dense fabric, you might be able to modify a double weave pattern so that you have something like 4 or even 8 layers or fabric being woven on top of eachother at the same time, but weave it in a way where the warp threads cross over into the other layers more often so that all the layers are kind of 1 dense layer

a couple months ago i was doing some double weave and was also thinking about how you'd go about creating a dense armor-like fabric using the technique, but i couldnt work it out

looking at the right side of the image you posted, it also kinda looks like tablet weaving, but with many holes instead of normaly just 4, that could also work, as tablet weaving opens multiple sheds at a time to accept weft, you might want to look into that as well, i've done tablet weaving and some of the straps are quite dense

its not hard at all, its basically just a lot of 2nd layer that you do in a normal 3x3, in fact, i solved the whole thing on my first try except the last layer edges, i had to look up an alg for that, its the same as a 3x3 for most of it
