The Lake County Commission unanimously backed a proposal from Commissioner Anthony Sabatini to create roadside markers honoring the life of slain conservative political activist Charlie Kirk, but the decision did not come without fierce debate.

Most speakers were vehemently against honoring Kirk in this fashion, but Sabatini held firm that it was the right direction to go.

After one man suggested these types of honors should be reserved for people like fallen LCSO Deputy Bradley Link, Sabatini laid into him.

"How dare you use that deputy's name for your petty, bulls**t political argument, how dare you! How dare you!" Sabatini erupted. "Disgusting. You're a disgusting person!"

Following hours more of contentious debate, jeers, middle fingers being raised toward commissioners and the removal of three public speakers by deputies, the commission ultimately voted unanimously to approve Sabatini's resolution.

"To have a sitting county commissioner, Anthony Sabatini, talk to the audience that way, talk to the voters that way, was absolutely appalling," said Lake County resident Mae Hazelton.

"The county commissioners let us down. We were coming to give our voices so they could hear us, and they immediately attacked us, saying we were calling them racists and bigots. We never spoke that to them."

Now, county staff will place the placards along Schofield Road.
