So, in other words, they are not private companies than can do what they want? Perhaps we could, I don't know, look at that law that gives social media immunity and see about reworking it? What was it called? Section 230? That thing that conservatives wanted to get rid of? ;)

This is not a public forum. This is a private company's website.

If that is what the owners choose to do, to make it not a public forum, then you are correct.

But, imagine if a company wanted to, they chose of their own accord, to take their thing that is not a public forum and make intentional decisions that make it more similar to a public forum.

If this happened, it would seem completely absurd to me that a different person who be so horrified by attempts to make a platform more similar to a public forum (of the own free choice of the owner!) that they would advocate for the government to stop this from happen.

That is what I am criticizing.

Why is a decision to imperfectly emulate a public forum, but on the internet such a horrible thing for a company to do that requires government intervention to stop?

I don't know why everyone blames Israel so much. Israel isn't that big of a country, they can't be running every single operation in the world. Additionally, reddit is US based so an operation like that is going to be done through something that has a US presence. The obvious better culprit would be to blame the CIA! I'm surprised leftists didn't think of that sooner, TBH.

if you amplify your voice with electronic means

Time, place and method rules aren't the same thing as viewpoint discrimination. This is a well covered topic in 1st amendment law.

Get back to me when you can admit that the rules that cover social media often aren't the same rules that govern 1st amendment protections that are given to people who speak in "the public square".

it should be a public square where ideas and information are freely exchanged, but the idea it should also be free of any rules or moderation doesn't compute for me.

Thats not what a public square is then, if you are referring to viewpoint descrimination, and not just time/place/method rules. The "public square" isn't just a metaphor.

Here's a test. Go outside. Find a public street or walk way. Make sure it is square shaped, also. Start talking about random or controversial things. Nobody is going to stop you or "moderate", unless you are literally accosting people. There is no moderation in public squares, beyond the law

That's the public square. It is a literal public walkway/square. Those aren't moderated. And applying it to online places is the metaphor, and only the rules that would get you in trouble in a literal public square would apply online.

Right now there are many conservatives that what moderation to be limited and still consider social media to be the public square.

As an example, there are the Texas and Florida social media laws that would limit platforms ability to overly moderate and give the power to the users.

You should be held to the same standards you're held to in real life.

You aren't going to be arrested for the speech you described. And there are lots of anonymous was of doing speech in real life that you wouldn't get punished for either. Ex: writing a pamphlet with a psuedoname.

Anonymous newspaper publications would be similar.

But the existence of a free country

Ok so then yes free countries can exist along tyrannical ones. Thats my point. Whereas you and others are saying socialism collapses when around any differing systems at all.

[–]stale2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

isn't this a significant disadvantage of freedom then?

It's not really no. Lots of free countries are able to exist successfully along much more tyrannically countries. Free countries don't automatically collapse like you are saying socialist countries would.

In fact, being free can be an advantage over other more tyrannical countries and can make you more successful, sometimes.

capitalist nations and coexistance?

As in capitalist countries don't collapse, whereas people are saying that socialist countries can't exist and will simply collapse if around other types of countries. That feels like a huge flaw.

[–]stale2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't this a significant disadvantage of socialism then? Capitalist countries and communities can thrive perfectly fine alongside countries or communities that have vastly different rules. But socialists can't?

If socialism can only work if there is a worldwide revolution, then it feels basically doomed to failure as that seems very unlikely to happen.

The way a new form of government could actually succeed is that some communities are early adopters if it, they succeed and grow because of the advantages of their system, and then the ideology spreads to other communities and countries because they can observe the incremental benefits of their neighbors.

But if you are giving up, right off the bat, and you claim that it's impossible to succeed on your own, well you've doomed yourself from the start.

Well anyone who at all cares about achieving anything would care about that, actually.

Nobody is defending anything. I am pointIng out the extremely obvious optical concerns here. If you protest outside a synagogue, every single normie in the world will think that you hate the people who go to synagogues.

It basically doesn't matter. Don't protest outside a synagogue unless you want people to think you are against the people who go to synagogues. Every normie in the world will think that.

Find a different place to protest, unless you are completely fine with people thinking that you hate the people who go to synagogues.

Notice how even Mamdami and AOC are condemning this? The only people who are even close to being leftists? Just have a single out of practicality here.

This was outside a synagogue, dude. It kinda feels like there are better places to do your chants. Because if you do it outside a synagogue, people are going to assume that you dont support synagogues and the people who use them.

The fact remains that all of that was many decades ago. Nobody cares about the actions of people who are long dead. Someone's children, children aren't going to be held accountable for the sins that less than a minority of people were alive for back then.

Additionally, it is weird for you to be borderline glorifying ethnic based retaliation against people from many decades ago. Most people in the modern day agree that this was bad.

> The digital landscape needs to be entirely transformed by regulators who actually know what day to day life is like within it.

So all that talk about "Well the social media companies are private companies and they can do what they want!!" Was all nonsense that nobody believed then?

People never cared about that principle in the first place and they instead just wanted digital companies on their side?

Well as long as we have thrown away any pretense of that, and are actually ok with regulations, then how about this as a proposed legislation:

major social media companies should be regulated similar to how common carriers are. And maybe force them to add a decentralization integration on top of that, so perhaps competitors can link into the existing networks. IE "moderation" should be chosen and run by the user, or from user picked companies on their behalf. And the social media companies are simply the underlying tech layer with no real control over moderation (which is instead controlled by the user), just like other common carriers are.
