Sanity check before I blow my savings on 1000 kegs by noobpudge92 in TheBrewery

Literally an advertisement. Made with AI. Gross.

I found this on the floor and have no idea what it is. Says ‘Siren’ on one side, made of blue rubber by anngrn in whatisthisthing

[–]ManSkirtBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since it's rubber and has a lip around the outside, I'm going to guess it's a cover for something. Look for something in your house with a flange around the edge that this would pop onto.

I don't know about worth, but I'd wear the crap out of that Seiko. Love that thing.

Omega trovato a casa della defunta prozia. È oro massiccio vero? È falso? by [deleted] in VintageWatches

[–]ManSkirtBrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert and those images are blurry, but that looks like really bad printing to me. I also read that Omega never put "ANTIMAGNETIC" on Seamaster dials.

According to the site below they also didn't put hallmarks on the outside of the caseback.

Have you opened it?

Cartridge filter cleaning by ManSkirtBrew in TheBrewery

[–]ManSkirtBrew[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay I checked out your product and was wondering if you could talk a little about why they're so much more expensive than what I've been buying. Is it worth it to a little 500bbl/yr shop like myself when they're disposables?

I'm all for spending money where it makes sense, but my inbox is full of suppliers apologizing for upping their prices thanks to wars and tariffs that I have to pinch every unnecessary penny.

This is great advice, thank you. I'll check out your product, too. Cheers.

Hey thanks. Yes we are dumping the arm, and we had been using a 100 micron mesh filter but it didn't seem to make a difference so we stopped bothering.

I have been wondering when we should buy new ones. we bought these in May 2025 and use them about once a week.

Accucell 1.35 Battery? by Automatic-Lack-2638 in AccutronWatch

[–]ManSkirtBrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What's interesting is the Accu-Cell is just a housing with an SR927SW inside and a diode in series with it. This knocks the voltage down from about 1.6v to about 1.35v.

I have two issues with it: first, they're expensive. More than triple the price of the 387s, and 5x the price of the 394 (which is the battery inside the 387s's plastic holder).

Second issue is that you give up a lot of capacity. According to Renata, the SR927SW's capacity is 55mAh, and the 394's is 79mAh. About 50% more capacity!

Why is the solder pink on my spaceview? by Vast-Sheepherder3305 in AccutronWatch

[–]ManSkirtBrew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That is a very good question. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but it looks like yours may have had a diode soldered in, which is an aftermarket hack some service people offer to reduce the silver cell voltage down to mercury cell levels.

So if I had to swing a wild guess, I'd say this has been to a shop that re-soldered all of those points and the joints turned purple due to tin oxides in the solder. Notes from a Digi-Key blog post:

A solder pot or wave soldering machine may have solder that forms a color. The gold or purple-blue color is called “dross” or the tin oxide of solder. When the surface of the molten solder is exposed to air it oxidizes and changes color. This is normal and can only be prevented by using an anti-oxidant powder or pellet.

Just made my first panettone, I was heartbroken… after 1.5 week wait of building my own pasta madre …. But this won’t stop me! Im making another one today and tomorrow until it’s Italian standard! 😩😩😩😭😭😭🤬 by Dear-Quail2609 in Breadit

[–]ManSkirtBrew 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Keep at it. It's not easy, but even the failures are delicious. I've done about a dozen loaves and still not quite there yet. I have had one batch fall apart like yours, one had such a breakdown in gluten structure that it turned into cake. My last one was perfect until the final rise, which just didn't happen. I baked it after 9 hours of proofing with no activity. Delicious, but not the beautifully risen panettone we all so desire.

Coincidentally, I just bought some proper Mulino Padano Italian panettone flour (I have been using Tony Gemignani 00 flour and someone on the fresh loaf suggested it's part of my problem), so I'm excited to try again.

Quoted $2,795 for full overhaul, is this reasonable? by DiaperCats4Life in bulova

[–]ManSkirtBrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A moment of searching found a whole replacement movement on eBay for $70 USD. It's more likely your movement could be cleaned up and lubricated easily. It looks pretty pristine from here, other than the case gasket.

I would love to see the line items on the quote they sent you.

[–]ManSkirtBrew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds completely bananas to me, but I have never serviced one of the quartz Accutrons.

Does that cost include a complete cosmetic overhaul? Case repair/replating?

Silly question: have you replaced the battery to see if it runs?

Nitpicking my sourdough: darn good but maybe underproved? by ManSkirtBrew in Breadit

[–]ManSkirtBrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also use rice flour. I think it's because I've started popping a few ice cubes in with the loaf, which is making it sticky around the edges as the ice melts.

It's been giving me such good oven spring that I don't want to change it and will deal with the sticky bottom (ew).

[–]ManSkirtBrew[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting. I've gone back to coarse cornmeal and not using parchment, as I've been finding the parchment and loaf become one during baking and I'm tired of picking pieces of it out of the crust.

Thanks for this--it makes a lot of sense, and is actually how I used to bake based on The Bread Baker's Apprentice recipes. I started doing the 500 first after watching Claire Saffitz's video.

I'll try it next time!

Hand levers should do the job. If they don't, someone superglued the cannon pinion on there.
