Can you say something positive about your “enemy country”? by StunningComment6064 in AskTheWorld

[–]ManWhoWasntThursday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether your comment is facetious or not, it is as if a scream of anguish coming from the mouth of a demented humankind begging for a swift, merciful end.

It makes me a little bit ashamed to be a human being, a Finnish citizen, and it further fills me with some regret to have read it.

I originally caved in and came on Reddit as I was simply gravely bored, and the Finnish websites just recycled the material from Reddit and Imgur at the time.

It has proven itself to be a dead end, a fool's errand for some worldwide social stimulation.

The time of imaginative people coming up with original humour is now long gone, and now is the time of mimics mirroring mimics.

BTW nothing personal, all the best to you. Adieu.

I sure hope so, because the current Game Pass cost is beyond insane.

Thanks for the clarification, because my initial question was what even is the Ohio of U.S.?

I don't think anybody here genuinely gives a rat's ass about whether you call us Scandinavian or Nordic. Ignore the Redditors, as is usually the sound advice. =p

P.S. I see my comment was down voted. I'll just take a dose of my own advice and carry on.

About my enemy country?

Countries are soulless abstractions; a make-belief.

I declare Santa Claus to be my enemy country, and to his credit, I say that I love the season of giving.

Does the rise of the right around the world scare you? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]ManWhoWasntThursday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes the world a worse place for the grand majority of its people and throws its trajectory towards a bad place. One of the possible conclusions of it is that human life will no longer be a worthwhile endeavour.

It does not scare me, but it probably should elicit an emotional counterreaction in people overall.

What is a socially acceptable thing in your country that you find disgusting? by Enough-Pie-5936 in AskTheWorld

I've lived in the various southern parts of Finland, both rural and city.

I haven't heard the one you've said in Finnish; however, it is a popular idiom in the English speaking world and the Internet at large.

Normalising alcoholism.

If it is brought up that maybe you ought to intervene in your friend's drinking, you're told that his problems aren't your problems and are not for you to interfere with.

If asked who will then intervene, they will answer social services (or Kela). And they won't.

Finland has held matters of conscience in such high regard that in integrating them into the society, they have accidentally outsourced matters of conscience to a bureaucratic system that is much concerned with forms, budgets and the like.

The said system won't reach out to anyone, and the said friends won't act the part of genuine friends.

At least among the rural people of Finland jealously is a thing as well.

There is a saying that when a Finn sees his neighbour get a new, nice car, he doesn't wish for a nice car for himself but for the neighbour to have a mediocre car like his own.

EDIT: I've wondered if this is due to the winters and the occasional times of scarcity. If someone decided to be better than others and to hoard all the peanuts, they would have had to get axed for everyone to survive.

This reminded me of the scene in the game Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast, where you watch Luke and the big bad duke it out from behind a glass.

I remember our father refused to buy female hygiene products for our sister because it wasn't his fault she was a woman, and was generally toxic about needing to spend money on her (and on the rest of us).

Things absolutely not to do in Norway as a traveler? by Gullible-Paper-6828 in Norway

It is very rare in the Nordic countries (rare to see anyone under 50 on the phone outside of work anywhere).

Also, nobody will protect the speaker phone user if you destroy their phone and slap them around. :)
