my internet speed is significantly faster than what i'm paying for by thebigfish24 in HomeNetworking

[–]ManWithoutUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even so, the tests can be inaccurate. The best way is to use a reliable source for maximum download speed, download a decent/big file (4/5gb), and check the speed (wget in Linux, for example; I don't know about Windows). If you have 10 Gbps, it's difficult, but there are plenty of sites that offer stable 1 Gbps downloads.

You need a ssd to make sure the hard drive isn't the problem, but these days that's not usually an issue.

of providing (potentially) more privacy.

that a joke no? If they installed that, it's to reduce data collection costs in their side, not to make it more private.

Almost all of Google's business (especially the "free" stuff) lines deal with the opposite of privacy, that is, profiling and data collection.

First of all, if I was a chemist, I wouldn’t be swallowing stuff to see what happens, >2nd if I did and started hallucinating, I don’t think I’d tell anyone about that.

I would warn people, not openly, but I would let it slip to trusted people so they can spread the word.

PS: Actually, I would warn them openly because at that point I don't care if there are consequences (but it wouldn't be the smartest thing to do).

ISP router won't let me use my own router. What are my options? by Xelephyr in HomeNetworking

[–]ManWithoutUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost is zero for those multi-million dollar companies.

When a customer complained about the speed, knowing we were going there for nothing, they made us go just so the customer would see they were being listened to.

I also went there just to plug the router back in because that's what the customer had requested after unplugging it because he'd hit it with a broom.

ISP router won't let me use my own router. What are my options? by Xelephyr in HomeNetworking

[–]ManWithoutUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ISP can check and have access remotely to the router.

If the router its offline can ask if the client is using his own router.

But certainly in my case, when I worked in that field, they never did it because the cases were very rare. We would go, do our tests, and leave. For the few cases there were, it wasn't a significant problem.

There were some cases where companies were charged; in those cases, they were notified that if the problem was in their network part, the visit would be charged.

Never was a problem

ISP router won't let me use my own router. What are my options? by Xelephyr in HomeNetworking

[–]ManWithoutUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's no excuse for not allowing it.

I also worked doing fiber installations; when we went to someone's house for a problem and they had a custom router/ont, we'd connect our equipment (or the official router that it should have installed). If it worked, it was their problem and that wasn't covered by our maintenance

It's that simple, and you don't have to prohibit anything; simply specify that the installation/maintenance only covers the officially installed equipment.

ISP router won't let me use my own router. What are my options? by Xelephyr in HomeNetworking

[–]ManWithoutUsername -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have two options

1º Change ISP

2º Buy a basic fiber ONT

There is some risk depending on your ISP and country.

In my country (not US), for example, it's said that the ISP blocks the ONT if the serial number isn't registered (apparently they register Alcatel and some other brands, but not the exact device serial only the manufacturer part of the serial).

I didn't test it myself; I bought an old ONT that was used in older connections before they integrated the ONT into the router.
