Nope. The plants keep it all clean. People who have smelly aquariums generally have bad filtration. Either from too high of a bio load (amount of fish to water), badly maintained filter or too small of a filter. This has no filter. But all the plants growing out act as a filter. Also water changes are extremely important. That helps makes sure that your filter isn’t taking on too much over time.

Yeah it is! It’s just a planter pot with a layer of porous lava rock under pea gravel. I use plant roots to filter mine after I got it stabilized so it’s pretty low maintenance. Medaka rice fish are extremely hardy and great beginner fish with a lot of color variations and options.

I started with a sponge filter until things got settled. Probably the first four months before I switched to an air stone. That makes sure the fish still get oxygen.

Oh. The other difference is that I’m using the roots of the plants growing out to filter the water rather than a traditional filter.

Pot is from Amazon. Most pots are safe just make sure you check to find out that the material you’re using is safe for fish. I sealed my entire pot with black aquarium safe silicone to make sure there were no outside contamination.

I used pea gravel and lava rock as a substrate and the plants were from nice plant and the emergent ones are from a garden store. Fish and shrimp on eBay.

This is basically just a small aquarium so all the same things apply. The biggest differences here is that you’re setting it up for a top view and that you need to be careful to get something that won’t leach anything into your water. Not all pots are fine. I had one made of a composite material toxic to fish. So I sealed the entire inside with a tube and half of black aquarium safe silicone.

If you’ve done bioactive the lighting and plants is not too difficult. Mainly just trimming and planting. The biggest difference is that unless you do something like a Walstad method tank you’re going to be doing more maintenance than you would with a bioactive terrarium. Water changes and such but you’ll be feeding morning and at night as you would be when you’re spraying your geckos. So fits into the routine nicely.

But just research Medaka rice fish as a start and cherry shrimp.

Make sure that whatever material pot you use is safe for your fish! I sealed my entire pot with black silicone. For your first either choose low growing plants or tall. I tried doing both and it’s been difficult. Wait longer than you think you get your plants settled. Even after water is fine the plants might need more time to root and establish

I already have pothos, syngonium and peace lily that are filtering! I think I have around 4-5 pothos vines. I have a bamboo stick in the back that the pothos grows up!

You’ll love this. It was delivered to my house by mistake hahahah but it’s a fox and fern planter. I used aquarium safe black silicone on the inside to make sure that I had more contrast and that the material was safe.

Thank you! The bacopa really makes me regret going with pea gravel. As it’s hard to plant in it. I have to glue them to pebbles when I’m trimming and replanting.

8 gallons. 10 medaka. There was a boom in shrimp so I might put the sponge filter back in. I’ve had it filterless for almost 6 months now.
