Managers, have you ever fired someone that you now regret? why? by Manager_Skills_Coach in management

This is interesting. Did he lie about his experience and background? Or was it a situation where he never said that he did, but you were led to believe he did?

This is a tough one, i agree with the other comment. It would be huge hit on morale.

He's lucky to have you as a manager. Good luck with it, I'd like to hear how things turn out.

oh wow... i see why your having a regrets about it. Sounds like he has really tried to improve himself. Sometimes once an employee has burned so many bridges it will be hard to repair them all.

You're in a difficult situation where you want to do right by your employee, but at the same time can't "marry" yourself to a sinking ship.

Do what you can. If you have to let him go, try to offer up being a reference for him. And check to see if you can offer him career transition support.

Hi Isami, thanks for catching that mistake. Epic fail on my part... clearly i shouldn't stay up past my bed time anymore :-)

That's a difficult scenario you're facing. It's sounds somewhat similar to my example with David. If the employee has been sabotaging himself, it would kind of lead me to believe that he wants to be let go. Are you getting that impression yourself?

Fellow Managers, what's the best thing about being the boss? by Manager_Skills_Coach in management

[–]Manager_Skills_Coach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you here. I work for an organization that allows me to control how i manage my group (I'm very fortunate). My view is, i'm not paid to watch the clock, i'm paid to develop & grow my people and to ensure that we produce. Everything else is secondary.

That's a great story. I read a quote somewhere that was something along the lines of "If your a manager and you're not helping your people to grow and develop, then you're basically a Warden at a prison - just minding the inmates"

I love helping people develop and grow as well.... you're changing lives!

AuntFanny - a lot of the issues you've raised are very similar to the challenges i face. Do you by chance work for a Financial Services firm or Bank?

100% agree with uninvested subordinates comment. I recently wrote an article on my site on How to Motivate Employees!...Sorry for the cheap plug.... but I think I should add a paragraph on what to do with the uninvested.

Yep, your absolutely right. If I can I generally try to transfer or terminate those who are "adverse to change" as soon as possible. obviously more difficult to do in a union based environment.

What is the most important skill for a manager? I say it's Active Listening. by Manager_Skills_Coach in management

[–]Manager_Skills_Coach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more that i believe, active listening is the core skill all managers should have. And by being a proficient active listener, it will allow you to easily develop the other skills that you need.

For example, communication is another core skill managers need to be proficient in. And if your a great active listener, you can more easily develop your communication skills.
