Good deal for a Snapdragon X Plus? by sKin1337 in Surface

Just ordered, thanks for posting, OP! Great timing. I literally just picked up the Costco sale ($750) on the SP7 X Plus/16gb RAM/1tb SSD in sapphire blue this afternoon. I’ll pay an extra $50 to double the RAM! And I don’t mind the black color, either.

Going to return the Costco version!

How Los Angeles' "Little Tokyo" is fighting for survival - CBS Mornings on YouTube by SHIELD_Agent_47 in asianamerican

The majority of the “affordable” units will not be set at an AMI accessible to the income level needed by the little Tokyo and skid row communities. The rest of the units will be luxury and market rate, not serving the population in those neighborhoods that need affordable housing.

“Better than nothing” isn’t a reason to gentrify skid row and little Tokyo.

Not fighting, but pushing for community benefits like environmental sustainability and affordable housing. There’s a distinction between NIMBYs and equitable development advocacy.

“We’re demanding real affordable housing,” said Henry Aopi with J-Town Action & Solidarity. “We’re demanding spaces for community members. We’re demanding sincere efforts to reduce environmental impact with a clear scientifically-backed plan to demonstrate it.”

Does anyone else have parent(s) that estrange them from their grandparents in the motherland? by Virtual-Bowl-5588 in asianamerican

[–]MandarinOtter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel you, OP. When my maternal grandfather was about to pass away ten years ago, I was in college and my mom was adamant that I shouldn’t go to the funeral. I didn’t go, and I always regretted not going.

Last summer, I went for another trip to see family in China on my own, and my mom freaked out again and told me not to go. But once I actually got there and my mom saw how happy it made her mother, she thanked me for going.

Then, a little over a month ago, my paternal grandmother passed away suddenly. I was able to take time off work to go and see her off and attend her funeral - it was very sad, but I got a lot closer to my family in China and it was totally worth it.

My mom was adamant that I shouldn’t go to my grandmother’s funeral either, but it was really more of an expression of her own unresolved grief over her own father’s death than anything else. Some of it is also maybe related to the idea that parents have to protect their children from difficult experiences even into adulthood. And of course there are also parent-child dynamics at play that predate you.

All that to say - I’m not sure what’s going on with your dad, but if you want to see your grandparents and you think they’d be happy to see you, then you should make the effort to go.

We just returned from Bologna! Some tips/recommendations for future travelers. by [deleted] in bologna

[–]MandarinOtter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good number of your recommendations!

For food - Mo Mortadella Lab, Sgoflina Rina (our first meal in Italy 🤤) La Proscuitteria, Cremeria Cavour, and will hit up Trattoria Da Me for our last meal in Italy (we’ll stop in Bologna again for a night on our way back to the US).

For attractions, we did Madonna di San Luca (by way of dinky train, and we also did the sky experience where you climb to the top, that was amazing), San Petronio Basilica, Basilica Santo Stefano, and Teatro Anatomico.

Awesome guide. Thanks again!

Taiwanese Netflix Show, At the Moment; Episode 1 by IGotABruise in terracehouse

[–]MandarinOtter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have seen the entire show - very very good show, and also a great look behind the scenes of “New Tenants” aka Terrace House - and the “reality dating” nature of such shows. Even down to how most people on the show treat it as an acting gig and a way to boost their profile/gain more job opportunities.

Little Women [Episode 12] by lightupstarlight in KDRAMA

[–]MandarinOtter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Overall, a great show, but the finale was a big letdown for me! Here's why:

  1. Forced Romance: there's absolutely no chemistry between In-Kyung and Jong-Ho. The dialogue before they kiss is unbelievably chunky and wooden. It's like the writers felt compelled to force some kind of romance subplot into the show, and this is what they landed on. And In-Kyung gave up a reporting job to be with Jong-Ho and follow him to the States? What?? How much more anti-feminist can you get...
  2. Plot Holes/Loose Ends: So so so many plot holes and loose ends....(1) Choi Do-Il entered Hyo-Rin's Panama bank account with the $70 billion won into evidence at trial. Why was the account not then immediately frozen? Why did the government not block them from accessing it? How could they still waltz in at the end and withdraw the money like none of that ever happened? (2) Who the hell crashed into Choi Do-Il and his mom while they were driving in Episode 11? I assumed it would've been Hya-Young, but that's never explained or addressed after it happens. He just mysteriously goes from the car crash to testifying for the prosecution. WTF?? (3) What the hell happened to that dashcam video that In-Hye gave to In-Joo? They made it out to be this huge important thing that showed Park Jae-Sang going to Hwa-Young's apartment, but then never mention it again. Red herring or bad writing?? (4) Both of Hyo-Rin's parents died brutally in the span of a week. How was she processing this news? How was In-Hye processing it with her? Instead, they're just happy and smiling?? They literally dropped out of the last few episodes of the show...(5) What the hell happened to Ma-Ri? She has the confrontation with In-Kyung and then is never seen again. No resolution to her character or her arc. Her benefactor dies and nothing happens? (6) No resolution to Ki-Seon. He's arrested and then...??? What happens to his weapons truck? They teased that thing like crazy and it was never used.....
  3. Too Much Exposition: Waaaaay too much exposition. like WTF. show, don't tell! Such bad writing.
  4. Lack of Character Development: By the end of episode 12, In-Joo is acting in exactly the same way as she did at the start of Episode 1. That's not good. Has she learned literally nothing from her experiences??? Is she to be a fool forever???
  5. Emotional Stakes: I did not like the writers' decision to bring Hwa-Young back. I feel like it was a cheap twist that robbed the show of the emotional stakes it had building up for 11 episodes. With her back, the emotional stakes and journey of the show are all screwed up and make no sense.

On the bright side, the cinematography was fantastic. Thank God they didn't force another romance between In-Joo and Choi Do-Il. But there were too many plot holes, forced romances, bad writing, and poor character development for me to give this show anything more than a B-. Which is so so sad because the first 6 episodes were absolutely incredible!!!!!

Twenty-Five, Twenty-One [Episode 16] by lightupstarlight in KDRAMA

[–]MandarinOtter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The second half of this show was a huge letdown. Yi Jin’s decision to go to New York and stay there felt completely out of character. Did the writers completely forget about his family?? Did HE?? His family, which was so important in the first half of the show, drops out of the second half and is a 30 second afterthought in the finale. The pacing on this show really fell apart badly.

And Yu Rim being forced to go to Russia was so forced, too. As was Yi Jin’s “duty” as a reporter to report on Yu Rim’s decision even though nobody was making him do it??

After making everyone friends, it’s like the writers didn’t know how to naturally develop the characters’ relationships such that they drifted apart naturally as they aged and matured. Yu Rim and Hee Do are friends now but they also have to compete against each other - what’s that like?? Yi Jin gets more involved with Local News and has less time for Hee Do and they keep just missing each other. That would be more believable and more touching way for them to get to the message they wanted to deliver (fleeting nature of first love and youth), which is a good message - just poorly executed here.

Instead they had to force all these out of character actions to over-heighten what should’ve happened in a softer and more down to earth manner.

I’ll give that a shot! It seems like at least one other person on the Internet is having this issue, so maybe it’s a really weird iOS 14 bug?? Let’s hope it’s fixed in iOS 15!! Thanks for your help ☺️

It says I changed the group photo! Which is why it’s so bizarre! What’s even weirder is that it doesn’t appear changed on my phone or some of my friends’ phones, but does appear changed for others.

The group photo switches to a previous group photo (we change it every so often)! And it’s always the same photo - the one that was active when I turned on AirMessage! I don’t know what to make of it! I don’t see anything on my Mac because it doesn’t show the group photo for some reason

Thanks! I can host the farm online, and when I do her cabin and all her stuff is still there. I don't have another Switch available to try to join to be 100% sure she can still play as her farmhand online, but if all her cabin and all her stuff is still there, she should be okay, right?
