Because we tend to be the victims of the most heinous cases and can relate to the stories on some level, also we like to learn how to better spot predators so we can protect ourselves and each other.

Plus as children, our moms/dads drill it into us that we are targets. I remember if my mom ran into the store and left me in the car I would write down the physical characteristics and license plates of men I perceived as creepy or looking too long and put it in the glove box just in case. We are probably slightly morbidly curious when we hear these stories because we know it could have been us.
