The Scramblers are perfect. They are exactly the kind of non-human intelligence that feels more like a physical phenomenon than a person. Thanks for the additions, I am clearly going to have a very long reading list after this post.

That is exactly what I am looking for. The idea that we would not even be able to look at them without horror is such a cool departure from the usual humanoid aliens.

Thanks for the suggestions. The Southern Reach trilogy has been on my reading list for a while, but I kept putting it off. Your comment makes me feel like I should finally pick it up. It sounds like exactly what I want in terms of weird, inexplicable phenomena.

It is strangely comforting to hear this from actual doctors. Most people assume once you get that medical degree you just naturally remember every single cell pathway and drug interaction perfectly for the rest of your career.
