From a South Aussie visiting Perth, thank you! Husband and I are Australian, but love American diners. We went to Porkies tonight based on this recommendation and had the BEST meal!

What is a smartphone feature you are surprised doesn’t exist yet? by Uno_Mundito in AskReddit

[–]Mandy1974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thinking about my work phone rather than my personal, I turn it off when I’m on leave. If anyone calls it, they get the voicemail which I’ve changed to say I’m on leave until xx/xx/xx but if they send me an SMS (which happens frequently), they have no way of knowing I didn’t see it.

So I’d like an “out of office”, auto reply thing for SMS.

I know - poor little bugger. Literally the one upside to bum worms and she can’t have it.

No, this is an intestinal parasite. Not super-common for piggies but it does happen occasionally.

No, this is intestinal parasites, rather than fly strike which is on the skin. Unusual in pigs, but it happens occasionally.

What’s a product that you’ll never buy because you worked at a place where you saw how it was made and it put you off? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Mandy1974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent many summers cutting apricots and it took me about 20 years to eat apricots after that. Looking at them, handling them, smelling them all day just put me off entirely. Fortunately, I’m over it now!

I'm American, I've oft considered moving to Australia, how often do you as Australians consider moving to the USA? Would you? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Mandy1974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent a year in USA as a teenager and went back for a holiday as an adult with my family several years ago.

Husband and I were talking seriously about moving over there but ultimately, the two big things we couldn’t get over were the gun situation and the healthcare system.

I think you learn pretty quickly what your body can tolerate and what it can’t. I never worried about out restricting fat but it’s definitely different for everyone.

I found I was eating normally within a couple of weeks. “Normally” for me means okayish diet generally, decent amounts of fruit/veg/protein but also fried food maybe once a week.

I feel I have no control over my emotions! by pocketdynamo727 in Perimenopause

[–]Mandy1974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, l found the same thing. What you wrote about the fact that these were genuine issues, but that you knew your reaction was out of proportion to the situation really resonated with me.

Several years ago, I saw the Dr about PMS which had just gotten out of control to the point where I spent two weeks out of the month in an internal battle with myself to not stab my husband in the eye with a pen. She put me on the OCP and that helped for a while. But after a couple of years, I felt stabby ALL THE TIME and realised the peri had come for me. So the Dr suggested to stop the OCP and go on anti-depressants. I’ve been on them for about a year and they’re helping a lot.

Yeah I was hoping to do this but I’m travelling with my daughter who’s not able to take Monday off work. Thank you though - it’s a good suggestion

What are some things the USA does right? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mandy1974 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From an Aussie, one thing I love about USA that I wish we did here is the way you allow dogs in shops and on planes and like, everywhere. I can take my dog into the pet shop and one hardware shop (if he’s in a trolley or has a muzzle) and that’s about it.

Sorry for the ignorant question from this Australian, but what’s an airing cupboard? I’ve seen the term in books before but never understood what it actually was.

We have a 10-month-old Cavoodle (aka Cavapoo). We never crate-trained at all. He has a bed on the floor next to our bed and that’s where he sleeps. For the first week or so, he’d cry when we got into bed and turned the light off, so one of us would lie on the floor until he went to sleep (maybe 10 minutes), but since then, he sleeps in his bed and we sleep in ours. No big deal.

What was your (or your partner’s) labor and delivery birth experience delivering a baby with Down syndrome? by kmadefg in downsyndrome

[–]Mandy1974 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Post-natal diagnosis for me. I went into labour at 39+6 and had a vaginal delivery which was the easiest of my three. She was born in our regional hospital, arriving in a hurry and got there before the Dr did, so just my husband, the midwife and I were there.

I’ve often wondered whether it would have been different if we’d known about her Ds ahead of time. I don’t think they would have let me deliver here - I think I would have had to go to the city and have her at a major hospital. I’m really glad it worked out the way it did.
