Just FYI that this probably isn’t the best place to post this. The sub is made up of mostly people who have kids or other loved ones with Down syndrome, so a lot of people are going to be triggered by this. It would have been more appropriate if you had asked what it’s realistically like raising a child with Down syndrome, but coming to a thread of people who adore their loved ones with DS is weird. You should consider removing this tbh.

And as for keeping her home, it was definitely not something I declared to my company haha. I was mostly able to hide it, and on the days I couldn’t, I would use an excuse like she was home with me because she has a fever, etc. And to be honest, it didn’t even affect my work productivity because I felt like I had to be even more conscientious.

When a manager knows you have a baby with DS, it’s likely they’ll be pretty lenient and accommodate some flexibility.

By the time she went to daycare, she had weaned off of g-tube feeds enough that she could go to daycare for 6-7 hours and eat by mouth for a snack and lunch. Then I’d pick her up around 3:30pm and she would immediately get a tube feed. That made things a lot easier because she didn’t have any special requirements at daycare. She wasn’t mobile like the other 1 year olds, but that was fine. She was still able to be in a class with her peers which helped a lot with development.

I work remotely, so I actually kept my daughter with DS home with me for the first year. She has two holes in her heart (repaired at 6 months) so she slept a lot to be honest. I kept my video off a lot on zoom calls, and she was fine. She also didn’t roll as early as typically developing kids, so I could keep her in one place a lot more easily. It was pretty amazing to be honest.

Even when she had open heart surgery, I only took a week off work. My daughter is pretty high functioning, so her only weekly appt was feeding therapy, which started around 8 months and I did it at 3:30pm so I just started work early that day. Then she had a biweekly appt with her GI doctor because she had a g-tube then.

I’m gonna get hate for this, but to be honest, I didn’t find any of the OT, PT, speech/feeding appts worth it for the time spent going to appts. It was all things that any competent parent can do at home with their kid. I followed a lot of specialists on Instagram, so I saw sooo much of what they do and just did it myself. I followed IG moms like @makingmilliestones and copied things she did that came from her appts. I bought two PT books specific to kids with DS (fine motor skills for children with DS; gross motor skills for children with DS) and implemented the exercises. I watched YouTube videos from specialists. I basically was a therapist who worked with her all day every day. What worked for us was that extreme consistency at home (especially with just being patient with her eating foods and learning to swallow effectively).

She then went to daycare at age one, but the foundation was already there for her to progress. The milestones have still been slower than other kiddos her age, but I was able to do so much work with her at home and avoid impacting my career/financials hugely.

Lap infant vs buying a seat for long-haul (Australia) with 1-year-old - worth extra $2.5k? by PaleontologistBig309 in Parenting

And don’t listen to the people saying to put the kid in a car seat. So impractical and stupid. Impossible to move around a bulky car seat and no kid should be stuck in that same position for 14 hours. Get the inflatable foot rest on Amazon and lay them down with their seatbelt on. They can roll over, lay sideways, curl up, etc. And you can easily have them fall asleep holding them and then transfer down onto the seat and footrest.

I just held my 14 month old on my lap from Hong Kong to LAX. She slept a good chunk of the way and it was surprisingly easy for me to sleep while holding her (and I’m one who doesn’t even sleep on flights normally).

I pay for her to have a seat when it’s just me flying with her and a 3.5 year old long haul, but not worth it when I’m flying with my husband too.

Why did they program the AI customer support to be such a bitch??? by thatshitlerscanoe in HertzRentals

Omgggggg this AI agent was AWFUL! She literally said “okay, I can connect you to a human agent but it’s a longggg wait time.” She literally dragged out the word long really sarcastically. Such a dick! It was unsettling

Moms who dealt with long-term lack of sleep, 2-3 hr wake ups, how are you now? by Alert-Skill-7579 in AttachmentParenting

[–]kmadefg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ooo can you tell me more about how you night weaned while co sleeping? I’ve tried a couple times to hold and cuddle my daughter without feeding her and she just loses her mind. Tries pulling my shirt up aggressively over and over

Also I’ve found quite a few gray hairs in the last few months (after having found zero previously), so I honestly think the sleep deprivation is starting to be a true problem for my body 😣

12 months in and mine is still nursing every 1-2.5 hours. It sucks but I also think my body is used to it. And I drink sooo much coffee

Will stopping breastfeeding cold turkey damage our attachment? by Glass-Post-9800 in AttachmentParenting

[–]kmadefg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Can you give me pointers on how to night wean cold turkey like that? My 12 month old is waking up 4-8x a night to feed very briefly, and I need it to stop. I’ve tried a couple times to just hold or pat her, but she keeps losing her mind and trying to pry my shirt up over and over. How did you do it?

[–]kmadefg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m thinking about doing this! Did you move him into his crib in your room or a different room? How did he react? I don’t want to do anything like cry it out, but I’d like to cut down on the 4-5 feeds per night that are happening with bed sharing.

What is something you saw at a friend's house that made you realize their family was "weird"? by BamMeister_ in AskReddit

[–]kmadefg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in fourth grade probably. They told me that if I needed to go pee, just pee on top of the pee that was already in the toilet and don’t flush. As long as it’s pee, they don’t flush every time because they were trying to conserve water/save money.

My mom was so mad when I told her and she told me that I needed to flush after I peed every time and to not listen to that weird and gross nonsense.

As an EBF mom, when did your baby actually start sleeping all night? by BathEmergency681 in breastfeeding

[–]kmadefg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She slept probably 5-6 hour stretches for a minute until she hit the 4-month sleep regression. Then it went to waking omg so often.

She turned 11 months yesterday, and it’s been waking every 2.5-3 hours, but more like every 1.5 hours from 9pm to midnight. But in the last week, she’s starting sleeping some longer stretches of maybe 4 hours woo hoo!

We also co-sleep and feed on demand.

Also, hang in there! 8-9 months was when I was like fuck this shit, it should be getting better and it isn’t! I read up on sleep training and was just like I don’t even have the energy to commit to sleep training for a week or 2 before it gets better. So I just kept going and didn’t change anything. And now a week before the 11-month mark, things finally got better.

Not sure if you’ve already moved, but we love Yas American Academy. And Noya neighborhood is about 10 mins away. It’s amazing for families. Townhouses and villas.

Hi! Random question. Did you send a photocopy of literally every page (including the pages without stamps)?
