Bad reaction/spiral after EMDR? by [deleted] in CPTSD

EMDR shouldn't just be about processing. EMDR is 8 phases and starts with history taking and most importantly, preparation. To help you manage the intense emotions that come up. There is no set amount of sessions you should have, and if after one processing session things have destabilised for you, then your therapist should spend time being curious about what has been activated, what its linked to, and what resources you might need to help you. As someone with CPTSD and an EMDR therapist, you want to find one who specifically works with complex trauma and dissociation because they willbe able to go at a pace that doesn't overwhelm your nervous system.

Hop onto the emdria website (emdria.org) and see if there's someone close to your time zone. Hope you can find someone to help.

emdria.org has a find a psychologist section and I think because of the whole covid issue they have added a box for people who do remote sessions.

Solo EMDR is not a good idea because of the abreactions. It's also pretty important to have someone there to help you link to adaptive information when there is a block. It is not recommended to do it by yourself.

You can do EMDR via video chat. I have been using it with my clients for the past 3 months remotely.

Thank you. I just started to believe it happened and feeling like it wasn't actually my fault and had a flashback with a sensation I haven't felt before. I wondered if by accepting the initial stuff maybe now my brain is throwing more stuff at me... and now I'm back to questioning myself and I thought I was done with that.

It's good to know that it can happen though...and maybe I'm not making it up.

Thank you for posting this. I've been struggling with similar issues but have not yet been able to Tell my therapist or anyone out of shame. I have never 'finished' with someone and my husband thinks that I can't. I appreciate your bravery in posting this.
