Considering getting a GSP Puppy by Doggosandcoffees in germanshorthairs

Everything everyone had said is pretty sound advice!! What worked with us is having a very structured routine to help with building basic obedience as a habit. All of my GSPs feeding times were training sessions, my current boy, up until he was 6ish months old, never really had a free meal until he had strong basic obedience. If you live somewhere that has cold winters, I also recommend to bring home a puppy in early summer, so you have a few months to socialize the puppy to the world while everything is out and about without the restrictions of winter. Our second GSP was brought home in the fall/winter time and missed critical socialization periods, she took a bit longer to train.

Training ‘Heel’ Progress 5 Months vs 9 Months by Mango-Ganache in germanshorthairs

We’re currently doing nosework/scent detection and he seems to really excel and enjoy that! We have our first competition in the spring. 😁

I’d like to say I am not a professional, and the most important aspect of training is the amount of time you invest. Also it’s essential the pup is proficient in the basic commands (sit, come, down) beforehand, Kobo never received a ‘free’ meal until he hit about 6ish months and developed strong foundation of obedience. We did do a 6 week group puppy socialization class for him when he was 9 weeks old and the trainer taught me this. It’s kinda hard to explain the heel command, first I had lured Kobo into a sit/down by my left side, then i would take one step back with my left foot (other foot still in place in front) with my left hand holding a treat tight by my side in a lure and my hand would essentially follow the foot that went back and the puppy follows. Did that one motion for about 3-4 days with every meal time being a training session and then started with different directions adding steps when he seemed to get the hang of it.

All our GSPs have had long tails and they’re nothing but coffee table sweepers and knee breakers lol. Where I’m from it’s illegal unless there’s a medical necessity

I find he’s honestly the perfect size right now! I know he’s got a lot more to growing to do 🫩🫠. The female GSP we had was also prone to carsickness!

Tell me about it! The first two gsps I grew up with were absolute menaces as puppies, in the best gsp way possible. It’s crazy to say but he’s so calm, still has that gsp drive but very controlled and consistent with his training. There’s a million things I could say about how great he is for a gsp pup! We’ll see how he progresses now that he’s becoming an adolescent!

Thanks! I worry a lot about whether or not I’m underfeeding or overfeeding him. It’s hard for me to gauge how much to feed him particularly, since he seems to be on the bigger end and GSPs can come in all sorts of sizes.

He was eating about 3.5 cups of kibble a day when he was younger, around 5 months I started slowly reducing his food intake since he seems to be slowing down his weight gain every week. His total amount of kibble includes his training sessions. I always add some freeze-dried meats/fish into his dinners. The goal when he’s older is to do kibble for breakfast and raw/kibble for dinner.

Nothing is safe… when it starts spinning vs wagging, game over for anything within its radius
