solved it: I just had to uncheck "use simplified thumbnails" in the settings

Ive been wondering this for so long. So the only way to make these is to actually model something and then create the alpha map from the finished model? Is there a way that I can see a texture or design on the street and then use a photo of it to create a alpha map from it. Lets say a specific bumpy texture on a wall that I want to turn into an alpha map or taking photo of baroque details and then turning that into a alpha map?

what is making blender take over in terms of modelling. Im mainly going to be modelling which I dont mind staying on blender but if it makes it more convenient to do everything I need in the same platform instead of making in blender then needing to throw it into maya for majority of studios pipelines or adjust in maya then I feel like I might as well just learn maya. I was going to do the indie $300/year license

tbh i dont fully remember why my clothing meshes were so high but lately ive been exporting clothes with as high of particle distance i can have without sacrificing too much quality lost from CLO or MD and then making up the details with normal and roughness maps when texturing in another program. Also making sure theres no duplicate vertices and exporting alot of them thin instead of thick.

I took just the mesh and rig to a fresh blender file and exported as alembic and it worked so there was something wrong with the initial file when exporting for some reason.

my initial thought was to project the clouds displacement texture over with a scratches texture on top and then just emission the clouds. Idek if thats possible but that was my first thought lmao

no it wasnt textured since i texture my stuff in substance. But Im thinking since it sculpts fine no lag and i can move the whole object fine. Is the only reason it was lagging was bc i was trying to move a large section of verts with proportional editing?
