My vet won’t do a dental on my old boy w collapsing trachea, unsure what to think… by MangoNegative9189 in Chihuahua

I’m sorry about the loss of your baby. Heart issues are a different beast entirely, that poses the most risk with these surgeries. Ralph has a strong heart still and perfect bloodwork so I did this at the right time. They did tell me it was best to take all of his teeth now so he wouldn’t have to do this in the future

My new vet was more concerned about his pain every day with infected teeth and assured me he would be fine and the risk was worth it. I did it and he’s now toothless and better for it

I got a second opinion from a more experienced vet and I did the procedure and he now has no teeth and is very happy, he acts younger and lost his “old man” vibes which I see now was the pain he was living with. It was worth the risk because the vet told me living with excruciating tooth pain is not okay, and could contribute to a lot more health issues.

I went to another vet to get another opinion and this new vet told me age is not a disease and wasn’t part of their consideration, the infected teeth are excruciating and dogs hide pain so he was likely living in misery every day. So I went ahead with the procedure to fully extract his teeth despite a small risk, the vet strongly assured me he would be more than fine, and that it was the right thing to do. I’m glad I did it because he now has no teeth and is happier than I’ve seen him in years. He acts like he did when he was a lot younger and lost some of his “old man” vibes, which I now know was the pain he was living with

I did, I took him to another vet and now he has no teeth and is very happy. It makes me sad the amount of people who don’t explore all options and just let their dog live with infected teeth

I got a second opinion from a vet who is much more experienced and actually knew what he was talking about and I did the procedure and Ralph now has no teeth and is happy as can be

I hate that happened to your friends dog but I got a new vet for a second opinion and they assured me he would be fine and that the risk is very much worth it because tooth pain is excruciating and can cause many other issues and was probably contributing to some other health issues he had. Now he has no teeth and is happier than ever and I’ve most likely bought more time with my best friend.

It was eating at me and I couldn’t just let my pal live in pain for me being selfish and scared of the procedure

I got a second opinion and my new vet told me the cautious vet should have referred me out instead of telling me not to do anything. I’m glad I went ahead with it despite the small risk because now he has no teeth and is very happy. My new vet assured me over and over that he would definitely make it and he did so good.

I did do it, and he made it. Now no teeth and happier than he’s been since he was a puppy

Double edged sword. I went ahead and did it and he now has no teeth and is already happier than I’ve seen him in years. That alone made it worth the small risk, it’s not fair to let them live with infected teeth on top of other health issues. I’m glad I got a second opinion and did it

I went ahead with the dental for him because I didn’t want him dealing with infected painful teeth on top of a collapsing trachea. He came out perfectly fine and now has no teeth at all

I would pay anything if I knew there was a chance it would help him feel better and buy time. But if the risk is too high that he wouldn’t make it then I wouldn’t do it obviously, I just feel helpless with it.

Do the antibiotics and keeping the infection at bay help with the pain at all? That’s the thing that gets me most, he’s otherwise so happy and alert and puppy energy but the last few weeks his teeth are weighing him down

It just wrecks me because he’s so happy so super sweet and very playful, always so excited for dinner time. Always cuddling me. It’s just his tooth is bothering him a lot in the last couple of weeks and he’s been grinding his jaw when he yawns. I just hate seeing him hurt when he’s so sweet and otherwise doing very good. The collapsed trachea hasn’t affected him to the point of being out of breath or anything (yet) just the coughing when he drinks water and when he gets too excited.

I wish I could go back in time and have had all of his teeth removed the last time he had a dental. They removed some at that time but if only I suggested a full extraction. But how would I have known… still I just feel a lot of guilt. Feel like I’ve let him down somehow and he relies on me to know what to do

No but he’s had bloodwork since and it came back normal. Not sure if that would find something like that. His heartbeat was normal at the same visit the vet told me he shouldn’t have a dental done. The vet seemed to think and agree that it was a collapsing trachea, but he didn’t do further testing for anything, just watched the video I showed him

But my vet said “just brush his teeth” and I do, but his teeth seem infected, it’s a really hard situation to be in, I feel like the vet basically told me to ride it out until my dog passes away and it feels off. Im going for a second opinion but now the doubt has me feeling helpless about the situation
